Why Anrich Nortje is Not Playing Today in SA vs CAN T20 World Cup 2026?

The T20 World Cup 2024 finalists South Africa are playing their first match of this edition against Canada. The clash is taking place at the biggest cricket stadium in the world, the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad.

Canada skipper Dilpreet Bajwa decided to bowl first after winning the toss. Meanwhile, South Africa skipper Aiden Markram announced at the toss that their star pacer Anrich Nortje is not a part of the playing 11 today.

Why Anrich Nortje is Not Playing Today?

Anrich Nortje is a right-arm pacer who has the ability to beat any batter with his raw pace. However, the Proteas are already going with four other pacers with the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch. Jansen and Bosch give the team batting options as well.

On the other hand, Rabada and Ngidi have comparatively more experience than Nortje in the shortest format due to which he couldn’t make it to the playing XI. Adding to it, Nortje didn't have a good time in the warm-up games as he went for plenty of runs.

Ngidi can be considered as Anrich Nortje replacement for the SA vs CAN T20 World Cup 2026 match as Rabada is already the leader of this pack. Nortje's selection for the T20 World Cup 2026 wasn't confirmed due to his recent injury issues. However, the selectors went with his experience which can play a key role here.

South Africa to Miss Anrich Nortje’s Experience?

Anrich Nortje is one of the best T20 bowlers when it comes to the experience in this format. The right-arm pacer has featured in 45 T20I matches and has taken 53 wickets at an average of 21.32 with the best bowling figures of 4/7, which came against Sri Lanka.

Apart from the experience on the global stage, Nortje has also featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has represented multiple franchises, playing at different venues across India. As a result, his experience could have been a key thing in this match.

Although he has missed this game, Nortje might come back into the playing 11 later during the tournament. South Africa's next two matches are against Afghanistan and New Zealand respectively, and Nortje's high pace can be the X-factor in both these games.
