Is Jamie Overton Done With Test Cricket? England All-Rounder Responds

However, Overton will now be seen in action only in white-ball cricket for England. The all-rounder has taken an indefinite break from the longest format of the game, which means that he could be missing the upcoming Ashes series (2025-26) against Australia.
Why has Jamie Overton Taken a Break from Red-ball Cricket?
Jamie Overton cited that at this stage of his career, it isn't possible for him to play all three formats of the game. Playing all formats has exhausted him and he just wants to focus on white-ball cricket currently. Hence, he will be taking a break. He confirmed the development through the social media post, saying:
"At this stage of my career across a 12-month calendar, it is no longer possible to commit to all formats at every level, both physically and mentally," Overton wrote on Instagram.
"Going forward my focus will be on white-ball cricket and I will continue to give everything to play at the highest level for as long as I can," he added.
Jamie Overton's decision to take a break from red-ball cricket comes as a massive surprise, as he recently made a comeback into the England Test side. He was part of the side during the Test series against India, which concluded last month.
Jamie Overton played the last match of the series against India at The Kia Oval. However, he didn't have the kind of outing he would've wanted in the first innings. The all-rounder went wicketless in the first innings and finished with 2-98 in the second with several catches dropped off his bowling.
While he had a decent outing with the bat, he was unable to take his team home. However, some reports suggested that after the series, he had a shoulder issue which might have made him take a break from red-ball cricket. Overton is focused on prolonging his career with the T20Is and ODIs as his primary focus.
Jamie Overton in England's White-Ball Squad
Jamie Overton, who scored 97 in his only other Test against New Zealand in 2022, is part of the England squad for the ODI series against South Africa. The two teams will be locking horns with each other in the three-match series, starting at Headingley on Tuesday (2nd September).
The all-rounder has also been named in the England squad for the T20I series against South Africa. Not only this, he will also be there for the ODI tour of Ireland from 17 September. He is now expected to be part of all the white-ball games that England play since he won't be a part of red-ball plans anymore.
Is This a Sign of Jamie Overton Retirement From Test Cricket?
With him taking an indefinite break from red-ball cricket, this means that Jamie Overton Ashes chances will be severely impacted. This could also be a hint towards his retirement from the longest format of the game, especially with him struggling with his shoulder.
Jamie Overton was part of the England squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He has played six ODIs and 12 T20Is in his career so far. With red-ball cricket not in the scheme of things for him, he would be keen to improve his numbers in the white-ball format. The all-rounder usually bats at No. 7 in ODIs and T20Is as opposed to his No. 8 batting slot in Test cricket.
