Why Ishan Kishan Delayed East Zone’s Declaration on Day 5 in Duleep Trophy Final? Explained

The Duleep Trophy final 2026-27 ended on September 10 with East Zone emerging victorious after 13 long years. It was a high-scoring game which ended in a draw and East Zone won by the virtue of a first innings lead.

The match had several highlights but Ishan Kishan's decision-making as a captain was also heavily scrutinized. East Zone had taken a mammoth first innings lead of 372 runs and instead of giving a follow on, they chose to bat again.

At the end of Day 4, East Zone were 212-5 and were already 584 runs ahead. It seemed like it would be enough for them to declare and have a shot at an outright win on the last day. However, Kishan had other plans as East Zone kept on batting till the last session, making sure that the match ends in a tame draw.

Why Ishan Kishan Delayed East Zone Second Innings Declaration?

Despite being 584 runs ahead, Ishan Kishan decided not to declare on the last day of the EZ vs SZ Duleep Trophy final. The reason for Ishan Kishan late declaration is not officially revealed yet but it is likely that he wanted to have the game fully in the bag.

The East Zone skipper didn't want the opposition to have a shot at the target even though the target was unrealistic. He was just waiting for the time when the two captains can mutually decide to end the match.

Kishan, one of the best wicketkeepers in India at the moment, finally declared after the second session was about to end and the South Zone captain was happy to shake hands as the match ended in a draw.
