As the Shai Hope-led team begins its India tour with the first of the three One-day internationals all set to begin at Thiruvananthapuram, the visitors will be up against an imposing challenge. That’s not just down to the fact that their hosts are going to be fielding a side laced with outstanding match-winning experience with Kohli, Rohit, and KL Rahul. West Indies will themselves feel quite bereft of a magnificent talent in their ranks who are known as much for hitting long sixes as they are for notching up big innings.

For what it’s worth not having Shimron Hetmyer in the WI ODI squad for India tour 2026 means having more than just scarce resources at the disposal of this fifty-over squad. It fundamentally means, not having the very batter who holds the highest individual score against India in fifty over cricket amongst all the names that one finds listed for the 50-over duties for the West Indies.

Much like how the series opener is to take place on a Sunday, the Shimron Hetmyer special too, struck India on a Sunday, albeit several moons ago on December 15, 2019. Moreover, back then all of 22, Hetmyer, played the kind of innings that far bellied his age.

This was his 8th series in one-day internationals and his 41st one in the maroon jersey. Then came the chase, and with it, the Shimron Hetmyer magic. Batting on a wicket where it did seem the batters could make merry upon applying themselves, he hung in on a nice MA Chidambaram pitch at the famed Chennai ground to help his West Indies in the maiden contest of the series.

In the run chase with despite the now largely forgotten Sunil Ambris falling early for 9 and the score reading 11-1 inside the fifth over, Hetmyer walked out looking utterly unperturbed.

Should more wickets have fallen, the West Indies had enough firepower in their arsenal back then in the form of the experienced Kieron Pollard and Jason Holder, two of the most dangerous batsmen in the world. Just that there never came a need for that. None of it. Looking absolutely set on a pitch as if he had grown up playing on the surface, you just didn’t find the leftie perturbed.

Not long after arriving, Hetmyer began scoring briskly. While attacking Jadeja, he nudged for singles and doubles against the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, someone considered a bit of a sorcerer. Shardul Thakur’s medium pace did seem quite banal to Hetmyer. He walked down the crease and lifted India’s medium pacers down the ground and even on the on side without much ado.

Perfect Partnership With Shai Hope

While Shai Hope, at the other end, offered restraint, Shimron Hetmyer embodied a typical Caribbean gusto. This was the series opener and the hosts may never have imagined that the two would stick around to make even the ever resourceful Mohammed Shami appear clueless.

Hope, who reached his century, offered more thoughtful glances, leaving the deliveries outside off never coming in harm’s way. His approach more cautious and backed by sheer timing. Hetmyer, on the other hand, was daring and offered a thrust of power. He’d get on his knees and lift the likes of Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja for huge hits.

This was to be his second ton in India. And he’d ultimately carve 139 runs taking just 106 deliveries to get to those. While the highlight of the match was a 218-run stand between Hope and Hetmyer, the highest number No. 3 partnership stand for the Windies in one-dayers in India, what was interesting was the volume of runs that came by way of hits to the fence.

86 of Shimron Hetmyer’s runs came by way of blows to the fence, with shots all around the wicket. At the back of perhaps his most significant century in one-dayers, Hetmyer turned an evergreen Cricket obsessed venue known for CSK’s yellow into a sea of West Indian crimson red.

Where India had hoped for his wicket and a few others, Hetmyer produced along with Shai Hope, a run-fest! For a team that often fails to bat its full quota of 50 overs, under Hope and Hetmyer’s guidance, the Windies chased down the 288 run ask with 2 full overs left.

And perhaps what mattered and greatly so wasn’t just the win itself but the fact that his opponents, Virat Kohli, the-then captain, and Rohit Sharma were seen as mere spectators on the ground.

Limited ODI Matches Despite the Talent

While he has been a key component of the T20I side, the appearances of Shimron Hetmyer in ODI cricket have been limited over the years. Just imagine the immense value that the same Hetmyer would’ve carried in the ODI series against India where at the back of match-winning experience he could have played for the Windies cause. Yet again. But then, some things aren’t meant to be.

Now that he’s rested at the back of the CPL and is expected to play the T20Is later on this tour, perhaps his West Indian colleagues may just want to reflect on how finely they’ve competed in the past against this behemoth of an opponent that is India.
