Why Sarfaraz Khan is Not Playing Today in SL vs IND 1st Test?

The two-match Test series between India and hosts Sri Lanka has started. India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first under sunny conditions on a pitch that looked for batting.

India's playing 11 for this match didn't have much surprises. However, the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan raised questions, especially after he was in contention for this game and preparing hard for it.

Why Sarfaraz Khan is Not Playing Today?

Despite early speculations of Sarfaraz Khan being in the playing 11 for the SL vs IND 1st Test, he has not found a place. Sarfaraz, who was brought into the squad to replace Sai Sudharsan, was in contention for the No. 6 spot due to his ability to play spin bowling.

However, the Indian team management picked Dhruv Jurel in this game. Jurel played the warm-up game earlier but failed to make the most of the opportunity. He will be under pressure to perform in this match, especially when Sarfaraz is knocking down the doors.

Jurel is also the second wicketkeeper in this side behind Rishabh Pant. However, he has been impressive with the bat during his short Test career so far. Despite being one of the best wicketkeepers in India, he won't get a chance to keep wickets in this game as Pant is in the Playing XI.

Will Sarfaraz Khan Play Next Match?

Sarfaraz is arguably one of the best batsmen in India in terms of talent. He last played a Test match in November 2024, against New Zealand in Mumbai. The middle order batter was picked for India's Test tour of Australia later but didn't get a game there. Further, he was completely dropped from the team.

However, he kept making runs in first-class cricket, keeping his selection in his own hands. If Dhruv Jurel fails to perform in the Sri Lanka vs India first Test, Sarfaraz might get a game in the next match in Colombo. He can play aggressively against spinners in the middle overs, a quality which India can utilise well.
