Why Shubman Gill is Not Captaining Punjab Against Chhattisgarh in Ranji Trophy? Explained

India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill is currently playing the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season with an aim to prepare for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. Gill is a part of Punjab's playing 11 for the second round match against Chhattisgarh.

While it was pleasing to see Gill playing the PUN vs CHG Ranji Trophy match, the fans and the spectators present in the stadium were slightly surprised to see why he is not leading the team. Gill is India's captain in two formats and many expected him to lead his state team in this game.

Why Shubman Gill is Not Captaining Punjab vs Chhattisgarh?

Shubman Gill is not going to be a regular part of Punjab's team over the course of this Ranji Trophy season due to his international commitments. It is the main reason why he is not captaining Punjab in this match.

The team management picked Uday Saharan as Punjab captain in Ranji Trophy ahead of the season and have backed the youngster to lead in this match as well despite the presence of a big name like Shubman Gill, who is currently one of the best batsmen in the world.

Despite not being the captain, this match will be key for Gill as he aims to get into the red-ball groove. He is slotted to bat at the No. 4 spot, a position which he holds in the Indian Test team as well.

Before the Tests, the Indian cricket team will play a T20I and an ODI series on the tour of New Zealand. Gill will lead the team in the ODI and the Test format, while Shreyas Iyer is the T20I captain. The Test series is highly important considering India's chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC).

Massive Boost For Punjab's Batting

The presence of Shubman Gill in Ranji Trophy will be a big boost for Punjab, who are coming off a draw in their first match against Assam. However, Punjab got important points after taking a first innings lead.

Punjab now have some of the best batsmen in India like Prabhsimran Singh, Uday Saharan, and Vihaan Malhotra in their playing 11 to go alongside the superstar Shubman Gill. The presence of these talented batters makes them a high-class side.
