Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Not Playing Today in IND vs JPN Match?

India are taking on Japan in the historic one-off T20I at the Sano International Cricket Ground on Tuesday, September 22. The fixture has attracted considerable attention because it marks the first men's international meeting between India and Japan, while 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was expected to be one of the major talking points after missing the entire Afghanistan T20I series.

However, the start of the match was significantly affected by rain and a wet outfield in Sano. The toss, originally scheduled for 9:00 AM IST, was delayed after overnight rain left the playing area unfit for scheduled play. Multiple inspections were required before the officials cleared the ground, with the match eventually reduced to a five-overs-per-side contest because of the lost time.

After winning the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer elected to bat first, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma confirmed as the opening pair. Despite the anticipation surrounding the young prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dropped again and has been left out of India's playing XI for the Japan T20I.

Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Not Playing Today in IND vs JPN Match?

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been named in India's squad for the Japan T20I, but the team management has decided against handing the teenage batter a place in the playing XI. There is no indication that an injury has forced him out of the match. Instead, the decision appears to be based on India's preference for continuity and the established opening combination of one of the best T20 batsmen, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.

The same pair was backed throughout India's recent three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Both batters made significant contributions during the series, with Samson registering two consecutive half-centuries and Abhishek producing a sensational 30-ball century in the third T20I. The management therefore retained the combination.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir had previously explained that Sooryavanshi would have to wait for his opportunity, stating that players who have performed consistently over a longer period would remain ahead in the selection order. Gambhir also indicated that once the youngster receives his opportunity, India would look to give him a proper run rather than use him for only a single game.
