Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal Snubbed; IPL Stars To Play in Asia Cup 2025: Reports

The 13th edition of the Asia Cup 2025 is just a few weeks away, starting on September 9, 2025. While the tournament was supposed to be held in India, it has now been moved to the UAE due to the ongoing political complications. This time, eight teams will participate in the Asia Cup, divided into two groups. It will be an intriguing tournament with new talents coming up in different countries.

However, the anticipation around the squads has kept the fans on their toes the entire time. As of now, only Pakistan have announced their squad for the tournament. Salman Ali Agha is set to lead a young Pakistan side which will be without Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, two of their best players across formats.

Meanwhile, Indian selectors haven't announced the squad yet. As per the reports, the senior national men’s selection panel will meet on Tuesday, August 19, to finalize the squad. However, the Indian squad could also see some huge surprises just like Pakistan.

No Place for Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal

Just a few days ago, there were multiple reports suggesting that India's Test captain, Shubman Gill, and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal might get a spot in the Asia Cup 2025 squad, considering their performance in the England series. However, two days before the squad announcement, reports claim that both players are most likely to be snubbed from the squad.

According to Sportstar, the selectors aren't considering Gill and Jaiswal's selection in the team and would like to go with the same player who played in the previous T20I series. Moreover, the Asia Cup final is on September 28, and the Test series against West Indies starts on October 2. It decreases Shubman Gill Asia Cup chances considerably since he is the captain of the red-ball team.

Similarly, Yashasvi Jaiswal Asia Cup chances are also hanging by a thread since he is an important part of India's Test team. However, he might be a part of the squad as the back-up opener. The reports suggest that the selectors are keen to continue with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson as openers in the T20I format. Notably, Abhishek has the highest individual score in T20Is by an Indian batter.

Comeback for Shreyas Iyer, Jitesh Sharma?

Reports also suggest that the selectors are planning on giving wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma and Shreyas Iyer a call-up for the Asia Cup 2025. Iyer hasn't been a part of the T20I team since 2023. Meanwhile, Jitesh's performance in the IPL was outstanding. While playing in the middle-order, he scored 261 runs in 15 matches at an average of 37.39.

While Iyer played a stellar role for Punjab Kings both as a captain and as a batter, Jitesh played the role of finisher really well, helping RCB win important matches. The Indian selectors would be hoping for the same performance for the national side as well. Jitesh could end up being the substitute wicketkeeper to Sanju Samson.

Will Jasprit Bumrah Play Asia Cup 2025?

The selectors have a huge decision to make regarding the inclusion of the star pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the Asia Cup squad. Bumrah is currently the best bowler in the world. However, his workload management is something that might concern the selectors. Moreover, with the West Indies series coming up, it will be interesting to see what the selectors decide.

Recently, Bumrah announced his availability for the Asia Cup and it is up to the selectors to decide whether to play him or not. In place of Bumrah, the selectors might give a chance to Prasidh Krishna, as he has performed well in the IPL. He claimed 25 wickets in 15 matches and won the Purple Cap as well. Moreover, his performance in the Test series was also impressive.

Apart from Prasidh, Harshit Rana is also likely to get a chance in the tournament. India will begin their campaign on September 10 against UAE before playing the arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14. There were speculations of India pulling out of their match against Pakistan but the fixture is set to be played as per the schedule.
