Will West Indies Players Boycott India Series After Pay Cut? Full Controversy Explained

The West Indies cricket team is all set to play a white-ball series in India starting from September 27. The tour, which will start at the Greenfield International Stadium, consists of three ODIs and five T20Is.

However, just days before the beginning of the series, West Indies cricketers have suffered a massive blow regarding their salary. The Caribbean team cricketers have faced a 25% salary cut amidst the ongoing financial restructuring of the Cricket West Indies (CWI).

The West Indies cricketers pay cut controversy can have an effect on their upcoming tour of India as well. There is a possibility for the players to boycott this tour, which will seriously affect the relations between the two cricketing boards.

Will West Indies Players Boycott India Series After Pay Cut?

Currently, there are no reports suggesting that West Indies players will boycott the upcoming white-ball series against India, which has possibly the best T20 team at the moment. Hence, the series will go ahead as planned with the matches set to be played on the given day.

It is unlikely that West Indies players salary dispute will lead to boycott of this series. This is because the Windies players have been consulted before implementing this pay cut.

The West Indies cricketers pay cut controversy will be implemented from October 26, 2026. It will remain in place till September next year. The CWI Chief Executive Chris Dehring thanked the players' association for their support in this period of instability.

Shades of West Indies Tour of India 2014?

The West Indies cricket team has earlier been involved in such controversy as well. In October 2014, the team, led by the then-captain Dwayne Bravo, abandoned from playing midway during the tour of India due to a salary dispute with their cricket board.

As a result, an ODI match, a T20I, and the whole Test series were cancelled. Due to this controversy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suffered massive financial losses and they even demanded compensation from the WICB (now CWI).

This strained the relations between the two boards for a temporary basis. However, the matter was resolved later with BCCI, the richest cricket board in the world, helping West Indies cricket several times to help them get out of financial struggles.
