Axar took his initial step in IPL with the one of the best teams in IPL, Mumbai Indians, where he spent most of his time seeing everything from the bench, without being able to make it into the playing XI. His breakthrough season came in 2014, with the Punjab Kings (previously known as Kings XI Punjab) in 2014, when he gave some crucial performances for the team, helping them to make it to the final. Axar took 17 wickets in this edition and even won the “Emerging Player of the Tournament” award.

Later in 2019, when the left-hander moved to the Delhi Capitals, he was not just being used just as a left-arm orthodox bowler, but also as a floater who can bat from number 3 to number 8 as per the situation's requirement. Axar Patel first IPL team was the Mumbai Indians, who signed him in 2013 from the auction at the base price of ₹10 Lakhs. However, he wasn't able to make it in the playing XI and warmed the bench throughout the season.

Axar made his IPL debut against the Chennai Super Kings in Abu Dhabi. He bowled four overs in this match and took 1 wicket as well. His performance in this season was appreciated as he won the Emerging Player of the Season award for IPL 2014.

In the next season, Axar got his first major IPL team when Punjab Kings at ₹75 Lakh in 2014, and this partnership went well for the next 10 years as he was consistently retained. In 2019, Punjab released Axar, which paved the way for him to join a new team.

As a result, Delhi Capitals bought him at ₹5 Crore, which eventually got doubled in 2022 because of retention during the mega-auction. However, his true market dominance was realized in 2025 when the Delhi Capitals picked him as their primary retention, securing Axar Patel IPL price to ₹16.50 Crore.
