Manchester Originals women made their debut in English cricket as part of the groundbreaking new The Hundred competition, which was officially launched in 2019 by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Manchester Originals women, which represented Lancashire, were one of eight initial franchises formed to provide a shorter, more thrilling 100-ball format. Initially supported by Lancashire County Cricket Club, the franchise immediately gained global notice. In early 2025, the RPSG Group, owners of IPL's Lucknow Super Giants, purchased a 70% controlling stake in the Originals, valuing the team at approximately £110 million. The RPSG Group has been investing in sports in India and has been one of the successful sports owners.

Manchester Originals Women History
The Manchester Originals were initially named Manchester Bees, and a Lancashire name was reportedly discussed but rejected. In June 2019, it was announced that the team would be called the Manchester Originals and that the inaugural draft would feature players from Lancashire. In November 2024, the squad announced Michael Klinger, a former Australian batsman, as its head coach. During their inaugural season (2021), they had a mixed campaign, finishing 5th and missing out on the playoffs, and the team failed to rebound strongly in 2022 and 2023, finishing 6th in the group stages in 2022 and 7th in 2023. Despite their efforts, they were unable to qualify for the playoffs. The 2024 season was also the same, as they won just 3 games out of 8 and ended up finishing in 6th position on the points table.
Manchester Originals Women Owner
Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the IPL team Lucknow Super Giants and head of the RPSG Group, has now bought the Manchester Originals team in The Hundred tournament. The deal is said to be worth around £107 million. That’s about half the value of London Spirit, which was earlier sold to a group of wealthy US tech investors for £195 million. The value of the Manchester team was decided through an online auction.
It’s still not clear who else tried to buy the Manchester Originals. With this new purchase, Goenka now owns three T20 league teams around the world. He already owns the Durban Super Giants, who play in South Africa’s SA20 league.
Goenka has always been passionate about sports. Apart from his cricket teams, he also owns the Mohun Bagan Super Giant football club, one of the most popular teams in the Indian Super League. His growing list of teams shows that his interest goes beyond just cricket; he’s investing in multiple sports.
