Summary
Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is moving towards the fifth gameweek of the 2025/26 season. While some players have shone with their performances, including some shocking names, some top players have disappointed in the early season. It is time to talk about FPL elite chip strategies.
The 2025/26 season is special for the FPL managers, as it is significantly different than the previous season, especially regarding the FPL chips. Previously, three out of four chips, which are Triple Captain, Bench Boost, and Free Hit, could be used only once in a full season. Meanwhile, the Wildcard chip was the only chip that could be used twice in a season, the first one between the second gameweek and the 19th gameweek, and the other one from the 20th gameweek to the end of the season. The first unused Wildcard couldn’t be carried forward for the second half of the season.
What is different in the FPL Chips for the 2025/26 season?
However, in the 2025/26 season, FPL managers can utilise all four chips twice. So, the Triple Captain, Bench Boost, Wildcard, and Free Hit can all be used two times in a season. The first set of the four chips is available till Gameweek 19, and the unused chips can’t be carried forward. The second set of four chips will be available from Gameweek 20 to the end of the season. Also, only one chip can be used for a gameweek. Now, the FPL elite chip strategy comes into play, as all the chips have to be utilised wisely and effectively.
There are no double gameweeks in the first half of the season, which is an ideal time to utilise the Triple Captain and Bench Boost. Meanwhile, due to no blank gameweek in the first half of the season, the first Free Hit chip also needs to be utilised differently.
FPL Elite Chip Strategies
In these FPL elite chip strategies, I am talking about all FPL chips and whether it is the right time to activate any of the FPL chips.
Triple Captain
While a captain delivers 2x points in normal gameweeks, the Triple Captain chip helps to generate 3x points from the captain for a gameweek. It is ideal to use when a player is in great form, and the opponent for the gameweek is struggling at present. For this chip, I always follow SportsDunia’s FPL Fixture Difficulty Ratings, where the in-form player’s team should have a green light for the gameweek (easiest opponent).
Currently, Manchester City forward Erling Haaland, Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, and AFC Bournemouth midfielder Antoine Semenyo are in dream form. However, in the upcoming Gameweek 5, Manchester City will face the hosts Arsenal, while AFC Bournemouth will challenge Newcastle United at home. So, it will be very risky to choose any of them for the Triple Captain for the forthcoming gameweek, as the managers need some luck to enjoy this chip fully.
Meanwhile, Chelsea will take on the struggling hosts Manchester United in the upcoming gameweek, where Pedro will definitely be the favourite. On the other hand, both Haaland and Semenyo will have some favourable fixtures consistently from Gameweek 6, as some FPL experts are excited to hold this special chip for these upcoming gameweeks.
Bench Boost
By selecting Bench Boost, all 15 players’ (playing XI + four substitutes) scores in an FPL team will be counted for a gameweek. To successfully utilise this chip, the entire FPL team needs to be clear, like no little injuries, no suspensions, no doubt on a player’s appearance, etc. It is generally useful for the double gameweek, but the FPL managers can’t enjoy a double gameweek in the first half of the season.
So, the Bench Boost is better to use when some top in-form teams are facing the weaker out-of-form teams, and the top teams have some strong in-form names. As some top teams have tough challenges for Gameweek 5, like Arsenal hosting Manchester City, Manchester United hosting Chelsea, and the hosts AFC Bournemouth taking on Newcastle United, it is not an ideal gameweek for this chip.
Wildcard
The Wildcard chip allows unlimited free transfers for a gameweek, and it can be utilised after completing the available free transfers for a gameweek.
If an FPL team has a huge issue generating enough points for the upcoming gameweeks (close to average points), and there are hardly any free transfers left, while there are many changes required, the Wildcard chip can play the saviour role. It is always advisable that -4 points can be taken by utilising one extra transfer, while the Wildcard chip should be used in the case of more trouble.
There are still more than three months left to end the first half of the 2025/26 season, and the situation can change very quickly, especially when two international breaks are still remaining this calendar year. However, if the present team is seriously struggling to generate enough points in the gameweeks, it can be a good time to use this chip.
Free Hit
The Free Hit chip provides unlimited free transfers for a gameweek, and the team can be used only for the same gameweek, as the previous team before using the Free Hit chip will return from the next gameweek.
It is best to utilise when there is a blank gameweek (some teams missing for a gameweek) or a team has a few injured or unavailable players (due to injury or cards). For this, I always go through SportsDunia’s FPL Injuries and Suspensions. My suggestion is that it is still too early to use the Free Hit chip.
