Yoane Wissa has been left out of the DR Congo squad for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The striker is yet to make his Newcastle United debut after suffering posterior cruciate ligament damage while on international duty in September. He is still recovering from the knee injury that has denied him the chance to play for Newcastle United since joining from Brentford in September. Thankfully, Wissa could finally play for Newcastle in December after stepping up his return to full fitness. Eddie Howe will no doubt love to have the 29-year-old back in action for his team.

Why is Yoane Wissa not in DR Congo squad for the AFCON

DR Congo AFCON squad has just unveiled the list of 26 players called up to compete in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2025, which begins on December 21 in Morocco. There is one player missing from the DR Congo AFCON 2025 squad, Yoane Wissa. He has been the team's star but has not featured in a game since injuring his knee in September. If the Newcastle United striker had been included, it would have been especially difficult to take when factoring in that Wissa picked up the injury with his country. He has been out since the last game he played against Senegal in September at home, so the coach has decided to leave him at his new club to ramp up his fitness level and get fit before he gets back into action for his nation in the World Cup final play-off next year in March.

Yoane Wissa confirms AFCON squad omission

Yoane Wissa shared the news of the DR Congo squad omission via his personal Instagram account, along with the message, "I'll be the number one supporter! Big up to the family.” Had he been a part of the DR Congo squad for the AFCON, he would have been heading away for international duties in mid to late December, with the tournament due to start just before Christmas.
