Fan in Spain Sentenced to Prison for Racially Abusing Marcus Rashford

Racism will never have a place in football and it seems the Spanish authorities are cracking down on any missteps by football fans in the country. According to recent reports, a Spanish court has handed a nine-month suspended prison sentence to a fan found guilty of racially abusing Marcus Rashford during a match between Barcelona and Real Oviedo.

According to ESPN, the offensive behaviour occurred during the LaLiga fixture between Barça and Oviedo at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium on September 25, 2025. The game witnessed the former Manchester United forward being deployed as an attacker, which ended up seeing the La Liga leaders walk out 3-1 winners. The incident was reported by La Liga at the time and Spanish authorities traced the messages and pursued legal action.

During Wednesday's ruling, the defendant was convicted "of violating the dignity of persons on racist grounds" having shouted out discriminatory comments at the England international during the match.

The suspension of prison sentences of less than two years is valid in Spain, and if the guilty party undergoes various educational programmes and adheres to the stadium ban, there could be some measure of leniency.

Rashford Racial Abuse Not An Isolated Incident

The Rashford racism in Spain and the subsequent swift ruling mark another significant step in Spain and La Liga’s efforts to confront racism in football. La Liga also released a statement on the ruling, which was seen by ESPN, stating:

Rashford has been a frequent target of online abuse during his career and has consistently used his platform to speak out against discrimination, especially following the 2020 Euros, where Jadon Sancho, Bukayo Saka and Rashford were subjected to intense criticism from some fans. The Rashford racial abuse, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by players despite growing awareness and enforcement, but the ruling from the Spanish courts sets a new precedent.
