Why WAFF Championship 2026 Got Postponed?

Summary

  • The WAFF U20 Championship 2026, which was set to be hosted by Kuwait, has been postponed amidst the ongoing Middle East tensions.
  • U20 teams from the confederation were set to compete in the tournament, which was last won by Saudi Arabia in 2024.
  • Iraq has won the most number of WAFF U20 Championships with two titles.

The WAFF U20 Championship 2026 has been officially postponed by the West Asian Football Federation following the ongoing tensions in the Middle East among Israel, the United States of America, and Iran. According to recent reports, the federation is reportedly concerned about player safety and war-like conditions, and will be revealing a new date for the commencement of the competition.

The prestigious tournament is an international football competition contested by the West Asian men's under-20 national teams, part of the WAFF. The competition began in 2019, with Iraq winning the inaugural competition. The fans will be disappointed that the WAFF U20 Championship postponed.

It is the latest footballing tournament in the region to get cancelled or postponed, with the 2026 La Finalissima being the first major event on the footballing calendar to get cancelled. It was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime clash which would have seen Lionel Messi vs Lamine Yamal.

Why WAFF U20 Championship 2026 Matches Got Postponed?

The reports suggest that the ongoing Israel-USA-Iran war has made it virtually impossible to ensure a smooth conduct of any football tournament. THE WAFF U20 Championship was scheduled to be hosted by Kuwait from March 23 to April 2, 2026, featuring eleven teams.

The 2024 edition saw Saudi Arabia U20 crowned as champions as they hosted the competition, courtesy of a first-half strike by Talal Haji in the 43rd minute against the United Arab Emirates U20 team. UAE's Mohammed Al-Mansoori finished the tournament as the top goal scorer with four goals, as Haji finished second with three goals.
