Born on 29th September, 2000, in Tbilisi, Georgia, Giorgi Mamardashvili developed a passion for football at an early age. His interest in the goalkeeping position peaked as he grew up playing in the fields and streets of Tbilisi. And you can say that goalkeeping runs in his family, as Mamardashvili's father, Davit, was recognised as an accomplished keeper during his heyday. Davit took up the coaching role for his son. He is pretty much the reason behind Mamardashvili's solid foundation. He began his training at the age of 10 with Gagra FC. It was back in 2010.
After two years, Mamardashvili moved to Dinamo Tbilisi's youth system. Over the years. his skills and goalkeeping aptitude were developed under the guidance of the professional coaches. Despite his commendable progress, Mamardashvili was struggling to break into the first team and was eventually sent on loan.
His first loan move was with Rustavi, where he had 28 appearances. After that, Mamardashvili went to Locomotive Tbilisi, where he made 29 appearances. He won the Erovnuli Liga Goalkeeper of the Year back in 2020 due to his exceptional reflexes and match-winning saves.
His amazing skills as a goalkeeper, along with his work ethic, made him one of the best keepers in the world. Mamardashvili finally had the breakthrough with Valencia, with Liverpool waiting to serve a greater opportunity.
In the age of modern football, most of the goalkeepers are popular for their gimmicks and antics. However, it is different from Giorgi Mamardashvili. His elite shot-stopping ability and a strong command in his box make him stand out. Moreover, his mental composure has been quite beneficial during penalty kicks. No gimmicks, no talking, just sheer reading of the game and athleticism.
In the 2023-24 La Liga campaign, Giorgi recorded a +10.2 xGoT differential. Since we are talking about the numbers, the figure we just mentioned ranked first in the La Liga and third in the top five competitions in Europe.
