Jay Stansfield was born in Tiverton, Devon, to Adam and Marie Stansfield. Adam was a former professional footballer who played for Yeovil Town, Hereford United, and Exeter City. Adam tragically passed away in 2010 due to cancer, leaving a lasting impression on his son's life and career. Coming from a family with its roots deep in football, Stansfield was introduced to the sport at an early age. He joined the Exeter City youth academy, where he honed his skills and developed a deep connection to the club. In August 2019, at the age of 16, Stansfield signed with Fulham’s youth system, marking the beginning of his professional journey. He also wore the No. 9 jersey in homage to his late father, who continued with the same number at Exeter. He also has two siblings named Taylor and Cody.

Playing Style and Strengths

Jay Stansfield’s physical profile is characterized by a strong athletic foundation. His tall frame of 6’2 benefits him in aerial duels and holding off defenders. His pace and acceleration are also a bonus, which enables him to get in behind defenses and create scoring opportunities.

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the Englishman’s touch and turn are reminiscent of strikers like Sergio Aguero and Jamie Vardy. Stansfield is also very technical and can manage quick separation before shooting. His power-to-weight ratio is also favorable, allowing him to accelerate quickly and maintain the same level of speed.

Stansfield’s dribbling is exemplified by a combination of power and panache. His excellent ball control allows him to maintain possession under pressure, whilst his shooting technique is clean and powerful, with a strong focus on accuracy and placement.

Stansfield is a confident and determined player who does not allow pressure to dictate terms to him. He is willing to take on responsibility, and his presence is noticeable in high-stakes matches. His grit and mental toughness stand out in his ability to adjust to different settings, especially when transitioning from youth football to senior football. Jay Stansfield is an English professional footballer who currently plays as a forward for Birmingham City, which has gained promotion to the EFL Championship from the third tier this season. Born on November 24, 2002, in Tiverton, England, Stansfield began his professional training at Exeter City before switching to Fulham at the age of 16. Yet to make his debut for the senior national team, Stansfield has represented England at various youth levels – U18, U20, and U21. Revered for his variety in attack, he has made rapid strides in his career, earning recognition for his performances on loan at Exeter City and Birmingham City.

Club Career

After graduating from the academy in Exeter, Jay Stansfield signed for Championship side Fulham for an undisclosed fee in August 2019. Four months later, Stansfield made his debut for Fulham in an FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa, coming on in the 82nd minute for Josh Onomah. Later that month, he made his league debut as an 88th-minute substitute in Fulham's EFL Championship match away at Charlton Athletic, again replacing Josh Onomah. He scored his first goal for the club in the 26th minute of Fulham's EFL Cup tie against Birmingham City on 24 August 2021.

On 2 September 2022, Stansfield returned to familiar territory, rejoining Exeter City on a season-long loan. Stansfield made his Exeter debut on 3 September as a 79th-minute substitute in a 1–0 victory over MK Dons. He wore the No. 9 shirt, which was retired to pay homage to his deceased father, Adam Stansfield, who had passed away because of cancer in 2010. The return proved to be fruitful as he had quite a blessed season.

A run of four goals and two assists saw Stansfield win the EFL Young Player of the Month award for October 2022. His father's blessing and his hard work seemed to be paying off as he completed his first career hat-trick, whilst wearing his dad's number 9 shirt, scoring all three goals in a 3–2 home victory for the Grecians against Morecambe in the final game of the EFL League One season. This also happened in his last game on loan for Exeter City, with Stansfield wrapping up an emotional and productive year.

Stansfield signed for Championship club Birmingham City on 24 August 2023 on loan for the 2023–24 season. His debut happened with a bang as he scored the 95th-minute winner against Plymouth Argyle. Stansfield received the club's Player of the Season award that year. Birmingham by then knew the quality of a player they had at their disposal and as such, gave him a fresh contract on 30 August 2024. Stansfield, too, acknowledged the contract and extended his contract at Birmingham City for a reported £15 million (rising to £20 million with incentives), This was a record deal for a club in EFL League One.
