In 2017: McKennie’s talent and potential earned him a promotion to the senior team within a year of his arrival at the youth academy of Schalke. He made his senior debut against FC Ingolstadt 04 in 2017 in the Bundesliga and also signed a five-year contract with the German club.
In 2020: After coming through highs and lows in his club career, McKennie finally came to Juventus on a season-long loan deal. He was deployed in almost every game by the Juventus coach and the first American player in the history of the club paid off in style by giving his all on turf. He scored his first Juventus goal against Torino. McKennie and Cristiano Ronaldo made a pair to bury Barcelona 3-0 in an away game of the UEFA Champions League at Camp Nou.
