Heartbreak for Jordanian football fans as they become the latest team to be officially out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 1-2 loss against Algeria at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California, United States on Tuesday. A first half strike from Al Rashdan gave coach Sellami and his men the dream start before Algeria clawed back in the second half through Nadir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri.

The stakes from the game were always high as the losing side was staring at elimination. It was Jordan who surprised all odds as brilliant work from Tamari opened the chance for a cut back for Al Rashdan on the edge of the box, who found the bottom right corner with aplomb.

While Jordan would try to hang on as they looked organised defensively to thwart Algeria’s constant pressure, but their efforts came undone midway through the second half as Mahrez’s corner perfectly found the head of substitute Benbouali, who levelled things up. The second goal for Algeria came from another set piece situation when Hadj Moussa’s inadvertent touch was flicked on towards Amine Gouiri, who poked home from close range to complete the comeback.

The result sees Algeria move up to third spot temporarily as they now gear up to face Austria in their next game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup which is scheduled to take place in United States, Canada and Mexico.
