Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City Player Ratings: Imperious Outing At The Emirates Sees The Gunners Score Thrice As They Get Off To A Flying Start In The 2026/27 Season

Summary

  • Kai Havertz put Arsenal in the lead in the 15th minute from a Riccardo Calafiori assist.
  • Bukayo Saka tapped home from close range just eight minutes later to double the lead for the Gunners.
  • Martin Ødegaard scored the third in the 49th minute to seal the deal for the hosts in this opening matchday 1 fixture.

The reigning Premier League champions Arsenal made a strong start to their 2026/27 season with a remarkable performance against one of the newly promoted teams, Coventry City. Mikel Arteta's side showed why they are considered to be one of the best football clubs in the world currently, as they did half of the job in the first half itself.

An error on the left flank from Milan van Ewijk saw Christos Tzolis win the ball and toe-poke it to Riccardo Calafiori, whose pinpoint low cross was slotted home with ease by Kai Havertz, who scored the last home goal for the Gunners in the previous season.

The second goal followed just eight minutes later, when Tzolis's menacing cross was parried away by Carl Rushworth, but the ball only found its way to Bukayo Saka at the far post. The Englishman, who was left unmarked, passed the ball into the net from six yards out, while Rushworth couldn't help but curse his luck as laid on the ground.

Loum Tchaouna of Coventry City tried an audacious no-look chip with his back towards the goal from outside the box, which did give David Raya a scare for a few seconds as the ball just landed on the roof of the net.

Arsenal came out in the second half with an aim to increase the tally, which was visible by the way they kept attacking the Coventry box.

They struck just four minutes after the restart, as Saka played a through ball for an overlapping Ben White on the right-hand side of the penalty box, which he cut back beautifully for the captain, Martin Ødegaard, whose scuffed shot was enough to deceive Rushworth.

The goalkeeper had already moved to his left and could not keep his footing while trying to get back into position, therefore getting a soft palm on the ball, which wasn't enough to keep it out of the net.

The Gunners held on to their clean sheet and have started from right where they left off last season, while Coventry City will be patting their backs for not conceding more in the second half of the game.
