Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Monterrey Player Ratings: Serhou Guirassy's Brace Helps the German Side Beat Monterrey to make Club World Cup Quarter-final

8 min
Dortmund vs Monterrey Player Ratings
  • The chemistry between Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi was electric and decisive, which is clearly justified in the Borussia Dortmund player vs Monterrey ratings.
  • Monterrey dominated possession and completed double the passes Dortmund did in the first half, yet struggled to penetrate a compact German defence.
  • A disallowed equaliser for Monterrey in the 65th minute sparked crowd unrest, with fans at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium hurling bottles toward the officials.

Borussia Dortmund defeated Mexico's Monterrey 2-1 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday to book their place in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup to face 15-time Champions League winner Real Madrid. Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi's brilliant link-up gave them a comfortable two-goal lead, but Monterrey were not much behind. The Mexican side was ferocious in the second half as he pulled one back with the help of Berterame, but that goal did not inspire a comeback as Niko Kovac's side managed to end the game without any shock.

The first half started with a panicked German side conceding attacks but were lucky enough not to find themselves behind. Niko Kovac's side started to grow into the game as the midfield started to build attacks slowly. It was in the 14th minute that Serhou Guirassy gave Dortmund the lead after a lovely give-and-go with Karim Adeyemi at the edge of the box before slipping in unmarked and beating Andrada at the near post. Although Dortmund had warned early that they had the ability to be inventive in their opponent's penalty area, Monterrey had first appeared to be the more determined team. Guirassy's goal was a perfect illustration of the kind of play the Bundesliga team can produce.

The German side doubled the lead as Adeyemi escaped down the right side, caught two players off guard, and then rolled the box into the middle for Guirassy, who once more scored at the near post. Monterrey simply don't have enough bodies forward to pose a real danger, even in the times when they had the initiative and generated some excellent opportunities. The promising assaults have tended to wane, and there were too many yellow shirts in the way.

Although Monterrey has had more possession of the ball and completed more than twice as many passes as their opponents, Dortmund has looked far more dangerous in front of goal and generated the better opportunities in the first half.

As soon as the second half started, Berterame had the easy task of heading into an open net to cut the score in half after Svensson's defensive header deflected off Aguirre and into his path in front of goal. Around the 65th minute, Berterame equalised, but it was promptly declared offside. One segment of the audience in Atlanta is hurling plastic water bottles towards the linesman who placed the call, ensuring chaos.

The Mexican side continued their rage, and soon Niko Kovac brought in substitutions to manage and slow down the game, which worked wonders. This victory will now take them to the quarter-finals of the competition, where they will face Real Madrid, who defeated Juventus 1-0 to reach this stage.

Let's have a look at Borussia Dortmund vs Monterrey player ratings.

Manager

Domenec Torrent: 6.7/10

His team performed really well, as Monterrey ratings suggest, against a team which had played the UCL final a year ago. His side kept the ball and pressurised the opposition with swift attacks but was not clinical enough to get the better of the German side.

As the Borussia Dortmund vs Monterrey player ratings suggest, Domenec Torrent's side has had the most of the ball and control, but Niko Kovac's side was by far ahead when it comes to being clinical in front of the goal.
