Summary
Host nation Mexico faced the Czech Republic in their final group stage game of the FIFA World Cup. While Mexico had already sealed qualification to the Round of 32, the Czechs were coming into this game in a bid to fight for their lives.
The game was quite even in the first half, with neither side seeing much of the goal. The Czech Republic national football team were in control of the game for the first few minutes, but Mexico gradually grew into the game.
Pavel Sulc had the best chance for his team, but his effort was way above the crossbar. Mexico had two good chances through Israel Reyes and Jorge Sánchez, but none of them found the back of the net.
The Mexico national football team opened the scoring in the second half, when Luis Romo held the ball brilliantly in the middle of the park before playing it to Mateo Chávez, who had made a brilliant run on the right.
Chávez evaded a lunging tackle from Michal Sadílek and slotted the ball past an onrushing Matej Kovár to give El Tri the lead in the 55th minute. Just six minutes later, youngster Gilberto Mora slid in another brilliant ball for Chávez to chase, but Kovár came out early to snuff out the danger.
However, the ball was awkwardly cleared by Tomás Holes, which rebounded off Kovár's and fell nicely for Julián Quiñones to nod home from six yards out to provide a breathing space for the home side.
In the 78th minute, the Mexico fans went wild as one of their legends, Guillermo Ochoa, was brought in place of Raúl Rangel. The player finally completed his appearance in a record-sixth FIFA World Cup, alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ochoa's long ball was key behind Mexico's third of the day, as Santiago Giménez picked it up uncontested and ran into the box before seeing his shot saved by Kovár.
The ball fell to Roberto Alvarado, who had the presence of mind to lay it off for substitute Álvaro Fidalgo, and the attacking midfielder hit it inside the roof of the net to put the final nail in the coffin for Czech Republic.
El Tri won their third match in a row and would be going into the knockout round with a lot of confidence. On the other hand, Czechia will be returning home with very few positives from their campaign.
