Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, commonly referred to as Atalanta BC, is a football club that plays in the Italian top-flight Serie A. Based in the city of Bergamo, Lombardy, they are one of the few clubs not to be based in a regional capital. Furthermore, Atlanta has had cup success and European success, but never had domestic league success.

Atalanta is known for their famed youth academy and integrating talents from the academy into their first team and later selling them abroad for high fees. They are the joint-most Serie B title winners and spent the most seasons in the top flight without winning the league title. Atalanta are now one of the top Italian football teams in the world.

Despite not seeing glory, they are one of the most consistent performers in the league in the modern era in the 21st century, especially in the 2010s. They owe everything to ex-coach Gianpiero Gasperini and his revolutionary methods. The club are a stable presence in the league now and can challenge for titles if they can punch above their weight. Atalanta are known for their passionate ultras as well. As the club enters a new era under Ivan Juric, let us take a look at Atalanta sponsors, Atalanta fans, Atalanta History, and Atalanta Net Worth.

Atalanta BC History & Key Facts

Atalanta was founded on 17 October 1907 by school students and was named after the Greek goddess of sports. However, it wasn't the only football club in the city of Bergamo. FC Bergamo was founded in 1904 and didn't recognize Atalanta before annexing with Bergamasca. To be recognised as the official club from Bergamo, Atalanta, and Bergamasca contested a playoff match that Atalanta won. In 1920, the clubs finally merged to establish Atalanta Bergamasca di Ginnastica e Scherma 1907.

Atalanta plied its trade in the second and third divisions before winning promotion to Serie A in 1937 under Ottavio Barbieri. They yo-yoed between the first and second divisions and performed consistently in Serie A in the 1950s after the war.

A first major success arrived in 1963 when they won the Coppa Italia after beating Torino 3-1 in the finals. It gave them a ticket to European football as they played the 1963-64 European Cup Winners' Cup. However, they spent much of the 1970s in Serie B and even got relegated to Serie C1 in 1981. This forced a change in management, which propelled the club forward. A run to the Coppa Italia final, whilst being in Serie B, gave them another run to the European Cup. The club found its niche in the midtable of Serie A in the early 200s. Former Genoa coach Gasperini was appointed before the 2016-17 season, and he changed the fortunes of the club.

He integrated the youth into the lineup and played an exciting brand of football. He led them to a third-place finish in the league in 2018-19 as they qualified for the Champions League for the first time. He exceeded expectations by guiding them to a Europa League trophy in 2024 after beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the finals. After a successful stint with the club, Gasperini moved on to Roma this summer as Juric took over the club.

Atalanta BC Rivalries

Atalanta has a long-standing rivalry with Brescia. They also have many on-field rivalries with top clubs in Italy like Inter Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Torino.

Atalanta BC Derbies

  • Derby Lombardo

The Lombard derby with Brescia has historical roots, with the rivalry between Bergamo and Brescia dating back to the Middle Ages. In 1126, Bergamo expanded its territory by acquiring land put up for sale by Brescia. This led to severe tensions back then, and the rivalry is still continuing on the field. There are fan clashes and violence every time the derby takes place.

Atalanta BC Trophies & Achievements

Atalanta have only won two major trophies, with a massive gap between the trophies. In both finals, they won, and there were hat-tricks from star players. Angelo Domenghini scored a hat-trick in the Coppa Italia final in 1963. It was Ademola Lookman's turn in the 2024 Europa League final.

Despite making plenty of other finals, they fell short of glory.

Atalanta BC fans and followers

Atalanta is the 9th-most supported club in Italy. The club's recent performances have drawn additional support among the younger generations. The ultras of the club unify under the name Curva Nord 1907. They were leftist in ideology in the 20th century before going apolitical. The ultras support the club in every nook and corner of the country and around the world.

On match days, the Curva Nord features flares, fireworks, and sets up Tifos to celebrate the match-going experience. The president Percassi came up with a new plan of distributing Atalanta replica jerseys to every newborn in the province of Bergamo to grow a familial bond from a young age. All these efforts helped the club grow globally.

Future Goals

Domestic league success has been elusive for Atalanta. They have a pedigree in other competitions, but they want domestic success immediately. Juric era might take some time to get going, but the club are hopeful of disrupting the hierarchy and also making a move in the Champions League.
