Sport Lisboa e Benfica, known to the layman as Benfica, is a professional football club playing their trade in Lisbon, Portugal, while competing in the top-flight of Portuguese football, Primeira Liga. The club was founded on 28 February 1904 and has since become one of the "Big Three" clubs in Portugal that have never been relegated from Primeira Liga, along with rivals Sporting CP and FC Porto. Benfica have two famous nicknames, namely, As Águias (The Eagles), representing the symbol atop the club's crest, and Os Encarnados (The Reds), for their shirt colour.
In 2006, Benfica had an estimated 14 million supporters worldwide, which reached a staggering number of 400,000 club members, making them the largest sports club in the world in terms of membership. They are the club with the most number of League titles since the Portuguese League's inception in 1934. The club has had four main crests since its inception in 1904. The origin of the current crest goes back to 1908, when its change marked the absorption of Sport Lisboa by Grupo Sport Benfica.
Who are Benfica Owners?
The club was founded 115 years ago under the name of Sport Lisboa, but its name was subsequently changed to Benfica after the club merged with Grupo Sport Benfica. Benfica owners are Sport Lisboa e Benfica sports club. The sports club, having Luis Filipe Vieira as their current president, apart from Football, also promotes 12 different other sports. Luis Filipe Vieira was the President of the club from 2003 till 2021, after being removed amidst allegations of fraud being levied on the veteran.
Benfica is owned not in the traditional way by big corporations or influential and wealthy individuals; instead, it is owned by the Fans, Socios, and Ultras of the club, thus making a system that gives back to the spectators that flock unselfishly to watch their favorite club play. Benfica football club owners are thus in a unique symbiotic relationship where ownership is divided between members and public companies.
Benfica in itself is a non-profit association which follows a democratic system where a large number of club members gather together in general assemblies to vote for the president, who holds the position as the ultimate decision-making entity in the day-to-day running of the club. The rest of the shares of the Benfica SAD are distributed amongst several minor private shareholders, Jose Antonio dos Santos holds 13.67% shares, Luis Filipe Viera even after his removal from the presidential position owns about 3.28% shares, 2.7% shares are maintained by the holding company SGPS SA, 0.0435% shares are owned by the current club president Rui Costa and the left over stake is divided amongst Fudacao Benfia and other individuals who have obtained their part through public stakes.
Thus, the club has masterfully combined member ownership and company occupancy, to maximize their potential in footballing and business sectors, respectively, simultaneously. The harmony in this uncanny relationship is achieved by the club's president, currently Rui Costa also chairing the majority stakeholder in Benfica SAD, ensuring the consolidation of the company's football operations.

Benfica Owners History: From Past to Present
Benfica is essentially owned by its Socios, who are paying members of the club who hold control through the democratic club setup of their voting rights with varying weightage based on the tenure of the membership. The sporting aspect of Benfica, however, is managed by the Benfica SAD, which is a public limited sports company of which Benfica maintains about 64% ownership, with the rest being divided amongst various private owners and the club's stakeholders. This helps in keeping the power and future of the club localized, in the endearing arms of the club faithfuls where it is eternally preserved.
The club transitioned into SAD under President Joao Vale e Azevedo in the late 1990s. Benfica has recently seen significant investments of 5.2% through American company LSP, eager to invest in the growing stocks of the club. There has also been chatter around the highest individual shareholder of the company, Santos Jose Antonio Do, being willing to sell his shares, with many potential suitors lining up.
The day-to-day activities are thus essentially under the judiciary of the people, as their elected president is the one who heads the club as well as chairs the board of directors for the Benfica SAD.
