Barcelona, a city well known for its unique architecture and, most importantly, as the home of one of the world's biggest football clubs FC Barcelona, defines the city globally through its blue and red stripes. Beyond the Blaugrana lies another club with deep roots - RCD Espanyol, a club that represents the Catalan identity and continuously fights for top glory. Founded in 1900 by university student Ángel Rodríguez, Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol was established with a single vision: to build a team that relies on Spanish talent. The Periquitos have been following this principle ever since, fighting for glory and existence against their much superior city rival, FC Barcelona.
Their competitive spirit has been constantly tested, with relegation being a recurring theme for the club. As of August 2025, RCD Espanyol are fighting to cement their place in La Liga. Last season, the club barely avoided relegation, finishing in 14th, with only two points separating them and 18th-place Leganes. This modern-day struggle is a powerful symbol of their fight for a distinct Spanish identity, proving to Catalonia and the world the existence of the Barcelona club. Join us as we take a look at Espanyol and its Espanyol origin, Espanyol stadium, history, net worth, achievements, and much more.
RCD Espanyol history can be dated back to 28 October 1900 by Ángel Rodríguez Ruiz, an engineering student from the University of Barcelona. The club was initially founded as ‘Club Español de Fútbol’, aiming to create a team primarily for Spanish-born players, in contrast to city rivals like FC Barcelona, who at the time also recruited foreign talent. This gave the club a distinct identity from its very inception.
As a founding member of La Liga in 1929, Espanyol has spent the majority of its existence in Spain's top division, making it one of the most historic clubs in the country. While the side hasn't won any league title, Espanyol has enjoyed significant success in cup competitions, winning the Copa del Rey four times. Espanyol home ground is RCDE Stadium.
