Mallorca History & Key Facts

RCD Mallorca, officially known as Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, was first known by the name Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII FC when the club was founded on 5 March 1916. The Spanish professional club is based in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. Mallorca got the “Real” in the club name when King Alfonso XIII granted the club royal patronage in the early times of the club. The current jersey colour of the club, black and red, came later; the players wore a black jersey at first in Mallorca history. Los Bermellones found their way to the second division in the year 1917 and became the Balearic Islands' unofficial champions.

In 1960, RCD Mallorca was promoted to the top flight of La Liga for the first time in RCD Mallorca history. From 1997 to 2013, the club was a constant presence in La Liga. In 1999, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, they became the runners up losing to Lazio. This was the period when they won the Copa del Rey by defeating Recreativo de Huelva. In Mallorca history of success, the Argentine former player and football manager, Héctor Cúper, is often considered the best manager of the club who marked a breakthrough by helping the club achieve a third place finish in La Liga in the 1998-99 season. Samuel Eto'o, who still holds the title of Mallorca's top goal scorer of all time, has played the key role in the victory of the Copa Del Rey in 2003 by scoring two goals in the final. The club has participated in the Champions League once in the 2002-03 season. From the Segunda División B, the club faced relegation to the third tier in 2017. RCD Mallorca returned stronger in 2019 and secured promotion to La Liga, but the club was relegated immediately. They were not ready to give up at that time, and they worked hard beyond their limits. In 2021, they achieved promotion back to La Liga, and since then, the club has remained in the league. After a year in the 2022-23 season, the club lost the victory of the Copa Del Rey to Athletic Club.

The Mallorca history tells the story of how RCD Mallorca was nicknamed as Los Bermellones (The Vermillions), Els Barralets (The Barralet), La Ensaimada Mecánica (The Clockwork Ensaimada), etc. The club is known as Los Bermellones because of the vibrant orangish red colour of their jersey, the word "bermellón" which comes from the Catalan "vermelló" means the shades of red, which is similar to the club's jersey. Els Barralets is another popular nickname, which is connected to the local pastry, the "Ensaimada", it is a spiral-shaped pastry that looks like the colour and shape of the club's kit. Thus, Mallorca got that nickname. Another name, La Ensaimada Mecánica, is a combination of the spiral shaped pastry and Mecánica, which means mechanical or clockwork, meaning the organised and precise movements of the team, which originated from the time when the team played in a mechanical style during the successful stint under the guidance of Héctor Cúper.

Currently, Andy Kohlberg owns most of the stake in the club. RCD Mallorca is a first tier club in the La Liga. RCD Mallorca home ground is Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, and it is also known as Visit Mallorca Stadium. Mallorca Stadium is the largest stadium in the Balearic Islands and now the 26th largest in Spain with a seating capacity of 26,020 Seats. To promote tourism on the island, the club made a deal with the Consell de Mallorca (Mallorca's Island Council) and was renamed the Mallorca home ground to "Visit Mallorca Stadium", which is the sponsorship name of the club stadium now. The current manager of the club is Jagoba Arrasate, who was appointed in July 2024, and his contract will expire in June 2027.
