Monza is one of those Italian clubs that have had a late rise in the Italian footballing scene and are dreaming of big things due to their recent exploits. Founded in 1912, the club mostly lurked in the lower divisions of the Italian league but never fell short in their hard work. They kept on striving hard and came close to achieving promotion to the Serie A a few times but couldn't quite make it. Monza got the tag of underdogs from the locals, as their reputation as a team remained that of a club with a lot of grit and pride who never managed to cross the finishing line. After a change of ownership in 2018, Monza got their much-needed push, and it was in 2022 that they achieved their first-ever promotion to the Italian top flight. They sit 11th in the Serie B table as of today, as they look to bounce back to the top division in the coming times.

Monza History & Key Facts

Let's take a look at Monza history. The club was formed on 1st September 1912 in an Italian eatery, based on the merger of two clubs - Pro Italia and Pro Monza. They chose blue and white to be their kit colour back then. Monza won their first trophy in 1913 - the Coppa Coli, against A.S.D. F.B.C Saronno - as they beat them 3-2 in the final. The club merged with many clubs in the meantime due to logistical issues, as they had to strengthen their foundation and compete against some of the elites to create an identity for themselves. Monza played regularly in the 2nd and 3rd divisions for the majority of the 1920s and 30s, which continued in the coming times too, as they fell short every time by a small margin. Monza stadium, back then, was Stadio Gino Alfonso Sada, which was witness to a lot of exciting Monza games.

It was in 1988 that Monza's home ground changed to Stadio Brianteo, which is now called the U-Power Stadium since its rebranding in 2020. In 1999, after 19 years in charge, Valentino Giambelli left the club, which also meant the end of Monza's association with AC Milan as a satellite club. The club had to go through a difficult phase both financially and on the field after Giambelli's departure, which made their future look bleak.

In 2004, Monza were declared bankrupt. A lot of owners went off as soon as they came in, as the club kept playing under different names, but there was no improvement in the quality of their performances. In 2018, the club was taken over by former AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi's company, Fininvest. Adriano Galliani, the former CEO of Milan, became one of the board members. The club's fortunes changed drastically, and they finally achieved promotion to the first division in 2022, after centuries of hard work and fighting. They had completed 40 seasons in the second division before their promotion, which is the most that a club has spent in the second division without getting promoted. Monza history speaks volumes about their grit and determination to rise against all odds and fulfill their long-awaited dream.

Monza Rivalries

Monza shares its rivalries with clubs like Como, Pro Sesto, Brescia, Atalanta, and Inter Milan. Of these, the rivalry with Como is the most intense one. The rivalry with Atalanta or Inter Milan is mainly due to their rising dominance from the area of Lombardy in the Italian top flight, while the rivalry with Pro Sesto is less contested as the latter mainly features in the lower divisions nowadays.

Monza Derbies

Monza plays its derby with Como, which is also known as the Derby del Lario. Lario is the ancient name for Lake Como, and both the clubs are located on opposite sides of the lake. There's another name for the fixture - the Derby della Brianza - as both teams represent the Brianza province in the Lombardy region. The latest fixture between the two clubs resulted in a win for Como in the Monza home ground, as they came from behind to win 3-1 in the most anticipated match of their respective seasons.

The Monza vs Brescia fixture is also treated as a derby, as both the clubs belong to the Lombardy region. While the environment is not as hostile as the one against Como, the fixture is still treated as a clash between two ambitious clubs, fighting to be the region's pride. The two teams have mostly faced off in Serie B, with their latest meeting being in the Coppa Italia round of 32 at Monza stadium, U-Power. Monza emerged victorious by a scoreline of 3-1.

Monza Fan Following

Monza's fanbase has grown significantly stronger since their recent promotion to Serie A in 2022. What began as a small, community-driven fanbase, people from the Brianza region started supporting Monza alongside AC Milan or Inter Milan too. Monza fans are known to be quite passionate but modest. Monza fans are mostly from the younger generation, as the club has risen to fame recently after centuries of playing in the lower leagues. Their first-ever season in the Italian top flight saw a record attendance, with almost 16,000 tickets sold out in each of the games against Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan. The Ultras group is named Curva Davide Pieri, after a young Monza fan who passed away recently, symbolizing solidarity.

Future Goals

Under new manager Paolo Bianco, Monza will look to finish in the top half of the table at least, with a possible finish in the top three to have a chance of qualifying for Serie A in the next season. They will also look to have a good run in cup competitions like the Coppa Italia, causing a few upsets on their way by knocking the big guns out of the tournament.
