Napoli has established itself as one of the most prestigious clubs in Italy. Founded in 1926, the club went on to become more than just a football team - a symbol of pride for the city of Naples. It was in the 1980s, after Diego Maradona's arrival, that the club emerged to be a global powerhouse in the world of football. They won two Scudettos in his time, which proved that the club from southern Italy could go toe-to-toe with the big clubs from the north. In recent times, Napoli has continued their fighting spirit and won the Italian league in the 2022-23 season, after a wait of 33 long years. Napoli home stadium is Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, which continues to be a witness to new chapters being written in the history books of the Napoli football club.

Napoli History & Key Facts

Let's take a look at Napoli history. The club started as an association of two clubs, US Internazionale Napoli and Naples Football and Cricket Club. Although the two clubs played as separate entities at first, it was in 1922 that the two clubs merged due to financial pressure. Napoli's current sky blue jersey was derived from Naples FBC's kit, while the white shorts were derived from Internazionale Napoli. Under the presidency of Giorgio Ascarelli and probable pressure from the then fascist government to “Italianize” the club, the club changed its name to Associazione Calcio Napoli on 25th August, 1926.

They played in the Serie A in 1945 but were relegated after two seasons due to a bribery scandal. They won the Serie B titles in the meantime to start off the 1950s in the Italian top flight. The new Napoli home ground was Stadio San Paolo, where they moved in 1959. Napoli won their first major trophy in 1962 when they beat SPAL in the Coppa Italia final. They were the first team from Serie B to win the Coppa Italia. In 1964, the club changed its name to Societa Sportiva Calcio Napoli, or SSC Napoli. Napoli signed Diego Maradona for a record-breaking fee of €12 million in 1984, which kick-started a revolution for ages to come. They became the first team from the southern division to win the Scudetto in the 1986/87 season. The club faced a decline in the 90s, both financially and on the field. They were relegated at the end of the 1997/98 season, returned to the top division in the 1999/2000 season, but were relegated again. Napoli were declared bankrupt in 2004 and were rescued by the Italian film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis. Napoli were forced to use the name Napoli Soccer instead of SSC Napoli until the next season. The old name was restored in 2006, and they achieved promotion back into the Serie A in the next season. Napoli history speaks volumes about their grit and determination to rise against all odds and fight against the top teams to make a name for themselves in the world of football.

Napoli Rivalries

Napoli shares its rivalries with clubs like AS Roma, Inter Milan, and AC Milan, but the fiercest is the one with Juventus. Most of the other rivalries are primarily on the basis of dominance in Serie A, while the one with Juventus goes beyond the field of football. Napoli also shares rivalries with clubs like Palermo, Catania, and Salernitana, but they are much less contested as all three clubs mostly feature in the lower divisions now.

Napoli Derbies

Napoli's matches with AS Roma and Juventus are termed as derbies in the Italian footballing fraternity. The derby with AS Roma, also known as Derby del Sole (Sun Derby), is one of the most traditional derbies in Italy. The fixture got its name as the clubs belong to the southern part of Naples and Rome, which are usually sunny. The derby was first played in 1929 and has since been an important fixture in the Italian football calendar. Napoli stadium has seen a lot of iconic derbies with Roma, one being the recent 4-0 win in their Scudetto-winning season, where both Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were the stars of the game and reminded the Napoli fans of the Maradona days.

The derby with Juventus is the most heated one, as the Napoli fans view it as a contest between the southern and northern parts of the country for dominance that ascends to an economic and cultural divide between southern Naples and northern Turin. The first time these two teams faced off was in 1926, and they have given the fans a lot of iconic matches over the years to reminisce about. One of the most famous Napoli-Juventus derbies at Napoli home ground was in 1987, when Maradona and co. demolished Juventus by a scoreline of 4-1, just after securing their first-ever Scudetto. This win was instrumental in symbolizing a rising southern dominance over the northern clubs in the Italian top flight.
