All the footballing moves are governed by the KNVB or Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond. Be it the activities of the Netherlands Football Team or the Dutch football teams of Eredivisie, all the activities are governed and monitored by the Royal Dutch Football Association. Founded back in 1889, the KNVB is one of the oldest football associations in the world and is a founding member of both UEFA and FIFA. The Royal Dutch Football Association is known for pioneering different footballing philosophies and supporting grassroots development. In addition to men's football, KNVB is also committed to the youth and women's football development, enhancing the standards of governance in football and improving the technical abilities.
The Netherlands National Football Team players played its first official match back on 30th April, 1905. In a thrilling 120-minute contest against the Belgium National Football Team, they won the game with a 4-1 score. In the earliest years, the team consisted of amateur Netherlands National Football team players. The first and major turning point came when the team embraced the Total Football philosophy under Rinus Michels. The unique approach was perfectly executed by Johan Cruyff, the father of football.
The Netherlands Football Team players reached their first FIFA World Cup Final in 1974. They have mesmerized the world with their fluid positional play throughout the tournament. However, they came out short against a West Germany team that was led by Der Kaiser and Der Bomber. Even though they couldn't lift the prestigious trophy, the world admired their soulful football. In 1978, the Oranje reached another final, this time led by Rob Rensenbrink. This time, they fell short against Argentina. After their fair share of hardships, the Netherlands finally had its crowning moment in 1988. Three of the legendary Netherlands National Football Team players, Rijkard, van Basten, and Gullit, led the team for their first major trophy: the UEFA European Championship. Be it the Netherlands National Football Team coach or players, the nation is never short of talent. Through the 1990s and early 200s, the Netherlands continued to introduce world-class talents such as Bergkamp, Robbe, and Van der Sar. However, they have failed to see any tournament through as a winner despite being so close multiple times. After their extra-time loss against Spain in the 2010 World Cup, they were so close again in their last World Cup campaign. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming in, a lot of expectations are riding on Oranje. Those of you who don't know it yet, Oranje is the Netherlands National Football Team nickname.
