Real Oviedo's main rival is fellow Asturias club Sporting Gijon. Their clashes are known as the Asturian Derby. The two teams have met each other innumerable times to contest for Asturias supremacy.
The Asturian Derby is known as the biggest derby in the Asturias region. From their first meeting in 1926, they went on to meet officially in the Spanish league in 1929 in the Segunda Division. Oviedo dominated that meeting and sealed it off with style (6-2). Fast forward to 1944, and the two teams met again, this time in the La Liga. Despite the stage being altered, the result remained the same, with the Carbayones getting another victory. Though Gijon had managed to reduce the deficit (2-1).
Over the years, these two teams have faced off against each other 15 times, with Oviedo holding the lead over their Derby rivals. In 15 games, Ovideo have won 7 while Gijon has won three. Outside the pitch, these two teams were also on the verge of joining hands when a financial crisis loomed over their heads. The year was 2000, and both clubs, seeing no other way out, decided to hold a meeting between the head honchos of the two companies to reach an agreement. There was also the possibility of creating a new stadium between the two cities, even though supporters of both clubs were averse to this idea.
Real Oviedo has won multiple trophies in the second and third divisions of the Spanish league. Real Oviedo's trophies have mostly come from the second division of La Liga football, which they have won five times. This is followed by four title wins in the third division.
Oviedo has over 257k+ followers on Instagram and has over 333k+ followers on their Facebook page. The club is going to return to the La Liga this year, and if they can put on decent performances, the fan following is only going to get better from here on.
Oviedo has already fought their way back to LaLiga after a 25-year absence, and as such their first goal now would be to ensure that they don't get relegated in their return season. The club has just unveiled their new kit for the upcoming season, and the morale is quite high among the players, supporters, and management alike, anticipating their return to the grand stage of La Liga.
One player who needs a special mention here is none other than Santi Cazorla. The 40-year-old “young” player has been an instrumental figure behind the club's ascension to La Liga. It would also mean that Cazorla is returning to La Liga after a five-year gap himself. Oviedo owner Jesus Martinez has reassured the fans that their beloved Santi will be on the pitch in their royal blue jersey: “Cazorla is going to play for Real Oviedo next season”. So the stage is set, and the return of the Spanish legend himself will surely be an emotional moment for Oviedo and Spanish football lovers alike.
