Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium History
Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium is a newly constructed stadium. It was established in 2021, 11 years after the announcement of the building of the stadium, in the Mullanpur village of the Mohali district. The stadium has so far hosted just 6 IPL games, and no international matches have been played so far. It is named after Maharaja Yadavindra Singh of Patiala, a notable patron of sports. The stadium embodies Punjab's rich cricketing heritage.
The construction of the new type of modern stadium started at the Punjab Cricket Association in March 2010. They aimed at having a world-class facility on 41.95 acres of land in the Mullanpur village. It ran much later than scheduled, but in the end, the ultra-modern venue was estimated to cost around ₹230 crores. The stadium can accommodate 38,000 people and provides for modern amenities such as a complex herring-bone type drainage system to take the water out within 25-30 minutes of rainfall. Besides, the sand-filled field is better from the point of view of support, though difficult to maintain.
The stadium stands out for its sand-based pitch foundation, which differs from standard clay or soil pitches. The stadium opened with a high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL) match between the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals. This venue, later announced as the home ground for the Punjab Kings, would go on to host several home matches for the Kings in domestic leagues and further enrich the cricketing landscape of the region.
