Fact Check: Was Rajat Patidar Out or Not Out?

2 min
Rajat Patidar

The 42nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 between the Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium saw something unusual happening in the first innings. GT opted to bowl first after winning the toss. However, the defending champions, RCB, got a steady start with Virat Kohli smashing five fours in a row in the 2nd over. However, Rajat Patidar's controversial dismissal stole all the spotlight as it divided the fans on the internet.

Was Rajat Patidar Out or Not Out?

The incident happened when Arshad Khan bowled a short ball, and Rajat Patidar attempted a pull shot but got a top edge towards deep backward square leg. Jason Holder sprinted in and completed a low catch while moving to his right. The on-field decision went upstairs, and the third umpire ruled Rajat Patidar Out, confirming it as Rajat Patidar Caught by Jason Holder Catch.

This decision didn’t sit well with RCB players, especially Virat Kohli, one of the best players in IPL, who was visibly unhappy and seen arguing with the umpire. The debate centered around whether Holder had full control of the ball or if it had touched the ground during the process.

According to MCC rules, a catch is valid only if the fielder maintains complete control of the ball without it touching the ground. The third umpire found Holder’s effort clean, hence upholding the dismissal.
