IPL 2025 Tweaked Rules Explained

The IPL committee and the BCCI issued new temporary tweak rules for player replacements for this season.

IPL 2025 is set to return after a short break due to the critical situation occurring in the country. The tournament was put on hold during the PBKS vs DC match on May 8, 2025. A week later, the BCCI and the IPL governing council announced the new schedule of the remaining matches of the tournament, which also includes the playoffs. RCB will take on KKR at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 17th May, 2025.

The league stage will go on till 27th May, and the playoffs will begin from 29th May, 2025. The final of the 18th season of the IPL will take place on 3rd June, 2025. The tournament began a month earlier, on March 25, 2025, with a total of 57 matches played before it was called off. Many teams were in peak form at the time, while others were unable to perform to their full potential.

Several individual player showed their skills, whether in batting or bowling, and helped their respective teams win matches. However, many key players were injured during the tournament, forcing teams to replace them with other players. As a result, the governing council and the BCCI issued new IPL 2025 tweaked rules for player replacements.

What are the IPL 2025 Tweaked Rules?

The BCCI and IPL governing council recently added two new rules for the franchises, which will provide clarity to the teams for the upcoming season. The first IPL 2025 tweaked rule states that 'Temporary replacements cannot be retained for the next season'. It means that players like Mayank Agarwal, who replaced Devdutt Paddikal in the RCB squad, and Mustafizur Rahman, who replaced Jake Fraser-McGurk for the remainder of IPL 2025 for Delhi Capitals, will be unable to be retained for the next season.

The second IPL 2025 tweaked rules allow the replacement players to be eligible for retention for the upcoming season. “Replacements approved prior to the suspension will remain eligible for retention,” the new rule states. It means that all of the players who joined the various franchises as replacement players prior to the IPL 2025 suspension are eligible for retention for the next season of the IPL. This means that players such as Dewald Brewis, who joined CSK in the middle of the IPL season to replace the injured Gurjapneet Singh, will be eligible for IPL 2026 retention.

It is great news for Chennai Super Kings as Brevis has been one of their shining lights for the season. He has played some stellar knocks for the franchise as he has played some of the brilliant knocks in a limited no. of games. The CSK management has the option of retaining him for the next year.
