Derrick White Early Life

Derrick White was born on July 2, 1994, in Parker, Colorado, United States, to Richard and Colleen White. Growing up, Richard helped in developing the fundamentals of Derrick since he was a high school baller. However, beyond that step, he made sure that he was always there for his son to step up and support. Similarly, White is often seen praising his father for being there and wants to pass down the same thing to his kids.

Moreover, he was not always a standout player on the court. However, getting into a Division II school changed his life and the game he played. Derrick White's extensive career in the basketball world is a marvel to witness. A player who was sent to the NBA G League during his rookie season came out as the NBA G League Champion. Later on, he not only proved his mettle in the league as a guard but also proved that he is not just limited to being in the role of a bench player. Rather, his performance compelled the Boston Celtics to make him part of the starting five of the team, an essential part to keep the offense and defense running for the Boston Celtics. Therefore, we will unravel the details about his basketball career that started from the scratch and then flew in full-fledged glory.

Derrick White High School Career

Derrick White attended Legend High School for early competitive basketball in Parker, Colorado. Notably, it was a new high school, and Derrick was part of the first team from the school, including the 11 other boys from the school. However, during league games at that level, the inexperience of the school surfaced since it could only win one league game in Derrick's freshman season. By the time Derrick was going out as a senior, he had improved his game while averaging 17.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.

He was an All-State honorable mention and All-Centennial League First Team for the Titans. Moreover, with him, the high school team went to state playoffs in junior and senior seasons. Notably, Derrick had scored more than 1000 points in his high school career, which is a big feat.

Derrick White College Career

Despite a decent performance in his high school career, luck did not favor White since he got admission to the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs (UCCS). It was a Division II school because Derrick had not received any invitation from Division I schools in the nation to play collegiate basketball.

During his freshman season with the UCCS team, he shattered the record for most points by a freshman with his 440 points. Moreover, he was also the RMAC Freshman of the Year. His performance improved further in the 2013-14(Sophomore) season when White tallied 22.2 points per game and led the whole UCCS men's basketball program in terms of point scoring average in a season. He had become a decorated athlete with the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week award three times in his second year of collegiate basketball.

It was during his junior year that Derrick White truly bloomed, as he managed to win the All-America honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He was the first UCCS player to receive the honor from the NABC. Moreover, he also won the MVP of the RMAC Tournament and was a member of the NCAA All-South Central Tournament team due to his stats featuring 25.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. White led the Mountain Lions to their first RMAC Tournament championship and to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division II National Tournament. That year, he had set the RMAC single-season scoring record (851 points) and the UCCS single-game scoring record with 50 points against the Colorado School of Mines (3/14) in the NCAA Tournament.

During 2015-16, he stayed redshirted since he transferred to the University of Colorado Boulder from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Derrick had already turned into an elite guard by now since he tallied 18.1 points, 4.4 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 51 percent from the field in his senior season. He completed 2000 points in his collegiate career, and his 49 blocks are the most by a guard in a season in team history.

Moreover, he was also named the Chauncey Billups Award winner as the team's MVP. He also got an invite from the 2017 NBA Draft Combine, including the First-team All-Pac-12 selection in 2017. Here are his college stats as per UCSS and Colorado University data:

Derrick White Professional Career

The San Antonio Spurs selected Derrick White as the 29th draft pick from the 2017 NBA Draft class. He inked a deal with the Spurs on July 6, 2017, and spent the rest of the year playing for the Austin Spurs in the NBA G League. He was mostly a bench player there and even fractured his wrist in the G League. Although by that time, he had already won the NBA G League championship with the Spurs team.

After that, he made various appearances off the bench, but it turned out he had left a plantar fascia tear in October 2018. Apart from a 26-point dump against the Brooklyn Nets in 2019, White did not get much limelight. Later, the Spurs announced that they had signed him to a four-year, $73 million rookie-scale extension on December 21, 2020.

After enjoying another two years with the squad, the Boston Celtics got him through a trade on February 10, 2022. It was an opportunity since he got to play the next day and tallied 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists in his first game as a Celtics player. He reached the NBA Finals with the team in 2022 but ultimately lost to the Golden State Warriors.

He shifted to the role of a starter in the 2022 season and was immediately selected to the NBA All-Defensive second team for his performance. His buzzer-beater in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat is still a legend since he became the second player in NBA history to hit a buzzer-beating game-winner with his team trailing and facing elimination. Only Michael Jordan's "The Shot" in 1989 is on top before Derrick's shot.

His impact stayed relevant as he won his team the NBA Championship in 2024 and is still going strong for it. First, he signed an extension in July last year. Then, in March 2025, he recorded a career high 41 points in addition to three steals, three rebounds, two assists, and a block in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Here are the stats that he has put up in the NBA so far, as per ESPN data:
