Crystal Palace Transfer News Analysis and Overview- 2024

Crystal Palace is one of the most oldest and prominent clubs in the top tier of English football, the Premier League. Founded in 1861, before officially coming to be recognized as a professional outfit in 1905 the club has been a part of the footballing ecosystem in England across various levels before finding its feet at the top division and becoming a mainstay since 2012.

Over the years, Crystal Palace has had big moments throughout its history and times when the club was on the brink of liquidation. All things considered, they have managed to set themselves up well in order to prevent such a situation and have become a decent mid-table side in the Premier League.

According to Forbes, Crystal Palace comes in at a respectable 26th position among the world’s most valuable football teams. Additionally, the club is said to have recorded a gross revenue of £180 million in 2023, which is a sure-shot proof of the club’s growing stature. Whilst the team is ways away from being their best-ever version, there is a certain new energy and positivity about the club as of late.

Crystal Palace Transfers Club Performance History

Like many of the clubs with their origins tied to London, Crystal Palace was among the few teams to be a part of the regional Southern League First Division. After the formation of the Football League, Crystal Palace was mostly confined within the lower Third and Fourth Divisions. That said, in the late 19060s, the club managed to reach the pinnacle of English football where they stayed until 1973, managing some memorable results against the big sides.

Being one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992, Palace would soon go on to find themselves in financial turmoil with regards to ownership and just overall troubles in sustaining the club. Eventually in 2012, under manager Ian Holloway, the club returned to the Premier League after an 8-year absence. For the most part, the club has struggled in relegation places, but somehow always managed to keep themselves above the drop zone.

Under manager Oliver Glasner, the Eagles finished the 2023-2024 season in tenth place, matching their best-ever League finish. That said, Crystal Palace has 2 League title wins to their name, whilst finishing as runners-up once. Interestingly, whilst the club has no FA Cup or EFL title wins to their name, their playoff wins in 1989, 1997, 2004, and 2013 are a division record as well.

Crystal Palace Transfer 2024 Challenges & criticisms

By and large, the 2023-2024 season was a successful one owing to the emergence of some real talents among the team’s ranks. In addition to this, manager Oliver Glasner’s system allowed these key players to thrive and make an impact for themselves. Notably, Eberechi Eze, Marc Guéhi, Dean Henderson, and Adam Wharton were all named in England’s Euro 2024 squad, the most number of English players from a single team for the tournament.

For all their high-flying form in the League last season, Crystal Palace currently find themselves in 16th, three points away from the relegation zone. This mostly comes down to a lack of goals which despite their valiant defensive talents has failed to deliver. With the departure of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich in the summer, the club has failed to adequately replace his level of creativity and goal-scoring ability.

Crystal Palace Transfer Strategy and Philosophy

All things considered, Crystal Palace’s transfer philosophy has been very simple and practical from the get-go. Owing to its capable scouting system, the club has managed to recruit talents from across Europe and the rest of the world and implement them in its system over the years.

In the past, the club was more drawn to bringing in talents from bigger clubs and giving them a more comfortable platform to shine. That said, there was a time in recent seasons when the club instead relied on their scouting network and brought in players from across Europe. That said, they have since fallen back to their old habits of recruiting from bigger clubs, giving a home to their wantaway talents.

However, the only difference now is that the club has now turned its attention towards younger players who have become squad players at bigger clubs but have the potential to be a starter themselves in the future. Often, players may be hesitant to wait for their turn at these big clubs and feel more drawn to projects like that of Crystal Palace.

Most Expensive Crystal Palace Transfers

For the most part, Crystal Palace is not a club that looks to spend big money on signings but rather focuses on identifying targets that they can acquire for a suitable fee, without having to pay over the odds. As such it will be surprising to many that the club’s record signings have all been under €32 million. With that said, let’s take a look at some of the club’s most expensive transfers.

To date, Christian Benteke remains the club’s record signing, coming in from Liverpool for €31.20m in 2016-2017. Following that we have Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal who arrived this summer for a fee of €29.70m. Next on the list is another former Liverpool player Mamadou Sakho who arrived in 2017-2018 for a fee of €28.20m.

Following these up, we have the likes of the current club captain Marc Guehi who arrived in the 2021-2022 season for €23.34m from Chelsea. The next name on the list is Cheick Doucoure who arrived from Lens in 2022-2023 for a fee of €22.60m.

Crystal Palace Transfers All Outgoing 2024/25

Naturally, Crystal Palace also had a lot to do in terms of making room for their new signings and making up for departures that had left a gap in the overall quality of the squad. Additionally, there were also players that needed to be moved on and some that were sent out on loan in search of better minutes.

Firstly, Michael Olise was snapped up by Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for a steep €53.00m, which is the club’s second-highest departure. Following him out the door was Joachim Andersen, who returned to Fulham for €29.50m. Similarly, Sam Johnstone was also sold to Wolves for €11.90m whilst Jordan Ayew went to Leicester City for €5.90m.

Top Signings for Crystal Palace in 2024/25

All things considered, there are still a lot of games left to be played with the midpoint of the season rapidly approaching. That said, Crystal Palace currently sits in 16th place and has been a bit of a mixed bag for the most part. The team has been massively struggling and despite their quality have only managed 2 wins in the new season so far.

As of now Maxence Lacroix and Ismaïla Sarr have become regular starters in the team and have been playing relatively well for the struggling Crystal Palace side.

Worst Signings for Crystal Palace in 2024/25

As mentioned previously, the departures of attackers like Michael Olise, Odsonne Edouard, and Jordan Ayew have also affected the club’s attack with Jean Phillippe Mateta and Eddie Nketiah being tasked with delivering the goods in front of the goal. Unfortunately, things have not gone to plan so far and Nketiah has been mostly utilized as an option off the bench.

Whilst his initial showings were impressive, he has massively fallen off the pace ever since and struggled to get regular minutes or find his place in the team.

Crystal Palace Transfer Spend Till Now

All things said, it was a busy summer transfer window for Crystal Palace with a number of new signings and departures. By the end of it, the club saw a profit of €23.00m, having spent €77.70m whilst raking in €100.70m with their outgoings. Certainly a good bit of business by the club, it also makes re-investing into the squad all the more possible.

As such, it remains to be seen whether these numbers see any change during the January transfer window with incomings or players being sold or sent out on loan.

Crystal Palace sign new centre back

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg. The new deal for the Frenchman is of five years. The Eagles will pay an initial £18m for the 24 year old, with add ons potentially taking the deal to £21m.

The defender will partner Marc Guehi at the centre of the Palace defence, replacing Joachim Andersen who moved to Fulham.

Crystal Palace targets Wolfsburg’s defender to fill Joachim Anderson’s void: Report

A recent report by ‘The Guardian‘ has highlighted that Premier League club Crystal Palace has placed a bid around the mark of £14 million (including any potential add-ons) to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in order to sign defender Maxence Lacroix.

Palace recently sold their star center-back Joachim Anderson to Fulham for a fee nearing £30 million. With the transfer window nearing its closure, it looks like the Eagles hierarchy is keen on adding to their defensive options after Anderson’s exit.

The notable point here is that Lacroix has earlier played under Crystal Palace’s current manager Oliver Glasner at Wolfsburg, so, adapting to his style of play in the Premier League, might not turn out to be that much of a hurdle for the defender.

Maxence Lacroix is into the last year of his current contract at Wolfsburg.

Newcastle United to cool down interest in Marc Guehi after yet another bid rejected: Reports

Newcastle United are reportedly set to cool down their interest in Marc Guehi after seeing their fourth bid rejected. The Magpies had tabled a bid worth £60 million with another £5 million in add-ons, but Crystal Palace have apparently turned that down too.

Now, according to Daily Mail reporter Sami Mokbel (via Transfer News Live on X), Newcastle are considering walking away from the deal. That would likely mean Guehi staying put at the Selhurst Park Stadium for another season. The centre-back joined the Eagles in 2021 from Chelsea after spending two seasons on loan at Swansea City, and has amassed 111 appearances in all competitions for Palace.

Crystal Palace ask Sam Johnstone to leave

The Premier League season is a little over a week away as teams get ready for the 2024-25 campaign. Crystal Palace are not new to the occasion as they look to strengthen their side ahead of the latest season. While talks of incomings have been top of the agenda, the club is also trying to clear deadwood in the squad and part of that plan includes Sam Johnstone’s departure. As per club sources, the goalkeeper has been asked to leave the club and find a new destination.

Johnstone who has been with Palace since the 2022 season comes with a handy experience having served for clubs like West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa in the past. A product of the Manchester United youth academy, Johnstone’s departure could pave the way for more additions to the squad also making way for additional homegrown talent. Palace could likely push for Aaron Ramsdale as a likely replacement for the four-time capped England international.

Crystal Palace’s Under-21 forward set to join Belgian club on loan

As per football transfer market expert and renowned Journalist – ‘Fabrizio Romano’, Premier League club Crystal Palace’s 20-year-old forward Ademola Ola-Adebomi is ‘heading out’ to Belgian club SK Beveren for his medical. If all goes well, the Eagles’ under-21 player will join Beveren on a season-long loan deal.

Adebomi has played for Crystal Palace’s under-18 side as well. The youngster recently was representing the London-based club in the Premier League 2.

In the last Premier League 2 season, the forward scored seven goals and registered one assist to his name in his ten appearances for Crystal Palace. It remains to be seen how his move to the Belgian club will turn out for him in the upcoming season.

Crystal Palace sign Marseille winger on a five-year deal: Report

Premier League club Crystal Palace have signed Ligue 1 side Marseille’s winger Ismaila Sarr on a five-year-deal. The Senegal international has signed a contract with the Eagles that will keep him at Selhurst Park till June 2029.

As per ‘BBC’, the transfer fee involved in the move is deemed to be about £12.5 million. Sarr has Premier League experience, as the 26-year-old has played a decent chunk of matches for his former club Watford in the top-tier of English football.

Despite his primary position being a left-winger, Sarr is equally potent on the right wing as well and can play as a make-shift center-forward too if the situation demands. Considering various aspects of the deal, it certainly seems like a decent one for all the parties involved.

It would be interesting to find out how Oliver Glasner utilizes Sarr in the upcoming season.

Ismaila Sarr eyes the Premier League return as Marseille agree on Crystal Palace proposal

After a season, Ismaila Sarr would return to the Premier League and possibly to London. Reports suggested that Marseille agreed on what Crystal Palace offered for the Senegalese. The French club accepted the £12.6 fee and the deal is expected to be finalised within days.

The Athletic wrote that Sarr himself already agreed on personal terms regarding his move. Before anything, the former Watford winger will have to undergo some medical check-ups for scanning his condition.

Sarr was familiar with the Premier League as he spent four seasons with Watford. During his time with The Hornets, he played in 128 competitive games, scoring 33 goals in the process.

Confirmed: Michael Olise Officially Leaves Crystal Palace to Complete Bayern Move

Michael Olise has left the Premier League club Crystal Palace to join Bayern Munich. The French forward, following an impressive season with the Eagles, has signed a five-year contract with the Bavarians. According to the official statement made by Crystal Palace, it has been confirmed that Olise has completed his move to Allianz Arena.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Palace will receive €45 million and €5 million add-ons from Bayern Munich, making it one of the big transfers in the history of the London-based outfit. The 22-year-old attacker clocked 10 goals and 6 assists in just 19 English top flight games last season.

Olise plied his trades in big English clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea before coming into the ranks of Reading. He is set to play under Thierry Henry in the 2024 Paris Olympics for France.

Crystal Palace Could Make a Move for Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham

The English Premier League club Crystal Palace are silently making their moves in the summer transfer window as they look to have grown interest in Jobe Bellingham. The high-profile forward currently plays for the EFL Championship club Sunderland. The Eagles are currently monitoring the situation of the little brother of Jude Bellingham.

The English youngster has already featured in the 45 Championship games last season. His contract length and transfer fee are yet to be disclosed by his current club, but the rumors say that he will stay at the Stadium of Light till 2029. Crystal Palace are one of the three English clubs, who are keeping a tab on the player’s position at the club, according to Reluctantniko.

Jobe Bellingham has already attracted a few clubs from across Europe after his elder brother Jude Bellingham made his dream move to Real Madrid last year. Crystal Palace, Brentford and Spurs are rumored to have grown keen interest in the player despite the chances of securing a deal do not look ideal. Sunderland seem to be reluctant to start any transfer talks as of now after just one year of signing Bellingham. According to transfer market valuation, the player might cost around €7.8 million. Jobe Bellingham joined Sunderland last year from Birmingham City.

Michael Olise joins Bayern Munich on a five-year contract

After spending three years with Crystal Palace, Michael Olise has agreed to join Bayern Munich on a five-year deal. From playing for a mid-table club to signing for the Bundesliga’s record league winners is going to be a big step forward for the England-born footballer.

Bayern announced in their official statement that Olise will be given a five-year contract which will be valid until 30 June 2029. Through the club’s board member Max Eberl, Olise is expected to give a new dimension to Die Roten’s gameplay under Vincent Kompany.

Olise himself admitted that he was thrilled with the opportunity to join Bayern. The winger will also regroup with fellow Englishman, Harry Kane, who has been scoring for fun in his debut season with Bayern in the Bundesliga.
