Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti slams Bayern Munich’s complaints about disallowed goal

Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash on Wednesday, May 8. The Spanish side progressed to the final, winning 4-3 on aggregate after the first leg had ended 2-2.

Alphonso Davies opened the scoring for Bayern in the second leg in the 68th minute. Joselu (88’, 90+1’) then scored a brace to seal the win for Los Blancos. The game wasn’t without its controversies though.

As Real Madrid pushed for an equalizer, they thought they had scored in the 71st minute from a corner routine. However, the goal was disallowed after a VAR check as Nacho Fernandez had put his hands on Joshua Kimmich’s face and pushed him down.

After Los Blancos had completed the comeback, Bayern had a counterattack, as a long ball was played towards Noussair Mazraoui. Mathijs de Ligt eventually put the ball in the back of the net but the referee had already blown his whistle for offside.

Bayern were furious as ideally the linesman and the referee are told to let the play continue but it wasn’t the case. Manager Thomas Tuchel and some players expressed their anger towards the decision after the game. When asked about it, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti replied:

“Bayern complained about the offside? Ok, so we complain about the cancelled goal of Nacho… because Kimmich dived.”

He added:

“The offside episode is simple to explain. Maybe it wasn’t offside, but the referee whistled (before the goal) and we stopped playing. That’s it.”

The Bayern manager was understandably furious with the decision and said after the game:

“A disaster. An absolute disaster. With Real’s second goal, they let the play continue. The clear rule is that the scene must continue. The first mistake was made by the linesman, the second by the referee. It was a clear violation of the rules.”

Tuchel also claimed that the referee apologized to him, saying:

“Very difficult. This is a semifinal, it’s not the moment for apologies. Really not. It’s not the moment for two huge violations of rules and then an apology. We all have to go to our limits, all have to suffer, all have to play without mistakes. The referees at this level also have to do that. When you don’t deliver, it doesn’t help when you apologize, even though of course as sportsmen we accept it”

Regardless, Real Madrid have now reached the final and are looking for their record-extending 15th Champions League title. They will take on Borussia Dortmund in the final.
