3 Players Who Could Sit on Bench for Entire IND vs WI ODI Series

3 Players Who Could Sit on Bench

The upcoming West Indies tour of India is a key white-ball series, especially in the context of the 2027 ODI World Cup, and is one of the most interesting contests from the perspective of Team India. While for the West Indies, who haven't yet directly qualified for the 2027 World Cup given a dismal run this year, it's a chance to put important points on the board, it gives a massive opportunity to one of the best cricket teams in the world, India as well, on the other hand.

The 3-match ODI leg of this white-ball tour gives some of the already established and preeminent names from Indian cricket, such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, an opportunity to further up their ace game in the limited-overs contests. They are, if you think about it, a fourth of any playing 11 in ODI cricket. With several experienced players already in the squad, the India vs West Indies ODI playing 11 could leave limited opportunities for some of the younger names

But as is often the case, there's always a bit of a journey that a talent likely undertakes- or doesn't- when, despite being named in the squad, one might not necessarily make it to the final playing 11. So which names from Indian cricket might not make it to the final playing 11 in perhaps any of the three one-day contests that are just about to unfold, with the first game all set for Kerala? And why could that be the case?

Let us attempt to establish some understanding:

Dhruv Jurel

One of the most talented and exciting young talents present at the core of Indian Cricket is none other than Dhruv Jurel. The mild-mannered, always focused and fine young cricketer recently experienced what could perhaps be called his finest achievement in an Indian jersey, as of date. He recently scored a valiant 115 against Sri Lanka. And that, tied with his year-round consistency, might have had a thing to do with his selection in the West Indies ODI series that's just about to begin.

But then the wicketkeeper-batter, one has to remember, is likely contesting with KL Rahul for a place in the playing 11 in Dhruv Jurel IND vs WI ODI, with Rahul having served Indian cricket for nearly a decade.

One of the best wicket-keepers in India, Jurel could have to wait for his opportunity during the West Indies series unless the team management decides to rotate its player. With Rahul currently holding an important role as vice-captain in the ODI setup under the leadership of Shubman Gill, Jurel may find himself on the bench for the series despite his recent performances.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

The biggest challenge, if one were to think of it like that, is that just how does one maintain a consistent presence in a team so powerful and replete with big names as India? While India already has three of their most prominent and experienced figureheads in the white-ball ODI squad, given Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma (both former captains), and KL Rahul, the younger crop already boasts of names such as Shubman Gill, the current skipper.

In terms of the playing 11, that's more than a third of the side already.

But when it comes to the testing waters of international cricket, what one needs in addition to talent, is stability in there as well- isn't it? On that front, the Rohit-Gill opening combination up the order becomes all the more important.

Would the Indian team be willing to tinker with that combination and change the rhythm, especially in times where it's perhaps important to have a settled and unchanged combination ahead of the next year's ODI World Cup?

Perhaps Yashasvi Jaiswal, undoubtedly a massive talent, and one who has already posted fine numbers against his name in 6 ODIs. He has 285 runs with an average of 71. However, the young opener will just have to wait a bit more before he has given a long run in the fifty-over format for international duties.

Another reason why someone like Jaiswal, could miss out not just from the opening slot but even in the middle order is due to the reason that someone like Ruturaj Gaikwad is already present in the squad.

Naman Dhir

The impressive Ambala-born 26-year-old Indian cricketer has, thus far, been most noted for his association with the famed Mumbai Indians, with whom he has played no fewer than 3 seasons. That's as of date. So when the talented young cricketer, Naman Dhir, who was seen in the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League, was named in the India squad for the West Indies ODI series, there was a fine feeling that one might finally get to see the man in the squad selected for the playing 11.

But can that even come true as the team has plenty of mainstream and middle-order batters named in the squad already? And that's when a majority of them already have considerable experience to their name. As a result, Naman Dhir could once again find himself waiting on the sidelines despite earning a place in the ODI squad.
