BCCI Issues BIG UPDATE on Rohit Sharma ODI World Cup 2027 Participation

Rohit Sharma’s future in India’s ODI setup has been one of the biggest talking points around the team in recent weeks. With the 2027 World Cup now firmly on the horizon, questions over experience versus transition have become unavoidable.

The former India captain is no longer involved in Tests or T20Is, but he remains one of the best ODI batsmen of all time. After the BCCI’s review meeting, however, the board has offered its clearest indication yet about where Rohit stands. BCCI update on Rohit Sharma has come as a relief for the fans.

The speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma intensified after reports suggested selectors were considering moving towards younger options ahead of the 2027 World Cup. But BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has now strongly backed the veteran, pointing towards his current form rather than his age.

"He (Rohit Sharma) is playing superbly in all matches. What more do you want? In the last match, he scored 130-140 runs. So why is there speculation? I do not want to give fodder to the speculators." Devajit Saikia said.

Rohit’s 138 against England at Lord’s was indeed a timely response to the speculation. He has also remained a regular member of India’s ODI setup, with the BCCI previously making it clear that Lord’s would not be his final international appearance.

Why Is Rohit Sharma Important For India In ODI World Cup 2027?

The argument for Rohit goes well beyond sentiment. He has played 288 ODIs, scored 11,895 runs, hit 34 centuries and 62 fifties, and averages 48.95. His highest score of 264 remains the highest individual ODI score in men's cricket.

His World Cup pedigree is equally significant. At the 2019 World Cup, Rohit scored 648 runs in nine innings at an average of 81, including five centuries, a tournament record for most hundreds in a single men's World Cup edition.

There is also the question of transition. Yashasvi Jaiswal is clearly one of India’s long-term options and one of the best openers in the world, but he has not yet established himself as a consistent ODI regular. His 2026 ODI exposure has largely come through the Afghanistan series, while Rohit has continued accumulating ODI match practice.

With the World Cup only a year away, suddenly removing a proven ODI opener and replacing him with a player still building his credentials in the format would carry its own risks. The more logical approach could be to give Yashasvi Jaiswal opportunities alongside the established core, rather than treating Rohit’s presence and Jaiswal’s development as an either-or choice.
