Cricket World Mourns as Veteran Commentator Passes Away Before IPL

In what is one of the most tragic news stories of the day, former cricketer and umpire Sudhir Onkar passed away on Friday, March 20. The development was confirmed by Lokmat Times on Saturday, March 21. Sudhir Onkar had been battling illness, and after fighting bravely, he passed away in Pune on Friday at the age of 73. He was well supported by his two daughters, who took care of him during difficult times.

Sudhir Onkar was among the talented cricketers to have played the game. He was an off-spinner who troubled many batters with his variations. Once he called time on his playing career, he continued his love affair with the game. Onkar, who was the chief manager at the erstwhile State Bank of Hyderabad, took up commentary as well as umpiring after his playing days.

He earned recognition as a respected MCA panel umpire and was one of the best cricket commentators in the world. He also anchored several sports programmes during major cricket tournaments. His knowledge of the game was highly valued by many. Not only local cricketers, but he also impressed international cricketers as well.
