Explained: How ICC T20 World Cup 2028 Format Is Different from 2026?

3 min
ICC T20 World Cup

Over the years, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken numerous steps to improve the conditions of associate nations in cricket and increase the opportunities for them at the international level. Recently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board concluded its annual meetings in Edinburgh, which aimed towards the improvement of global events like the ICC Men's World Cup and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Just like the ICC Men's World Cup Format has been changed, similarly, a new format has come into place for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Let's find out the ICC T20 World Cup format changes from previous editions.

Key Changes in ICC T20 World Cup 2028 New Format

The ICC T20 World Cup 2028 format highlights some of the key changes, as the group stage will now consist of 30 matches instead of 40 matches. The biggest structural change is the replacement of the Super Eights with the Super 10. Instead of two groups of four teams, the second round will now feature two groups of five teams, giving teams more matches against best T20 teams in the world.

Previously, the top two teams from each Super Eight group advanced directly to the semifinals. Under the new format, only the group winners in the Super 10 stage qualify automatically. A new format has introduced: the Eliminator round, where teams finishing second in one Super 10 group will face the third-placed team from the opposite group. The winners of these two Eliminators will complete the semifinal lineup.

This new format gives teams another chance to reach the semifinals through the Eliminators, unlike the previous format. Here are the differences in the ICC T20 World Cup 2028 new format explained more precisely:
