Shreyas Iyer to Lead India A in the Unofficial 50-Over Series Against Australia A

The India A will be captained by one of the best cricketers in the world, Shreyas Iyer, in the unofficial 50-over series against Australia A. Earlier, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Rajat Patidar and Tilak Varma as leaders for the series, but recently made a change to the squad.

After Shreyas Iyer emailed BCCI about his decision to take a break from red-ball cricket, he was drafted into the India A side as captain. Notably, he captained India A in the first test and then left ahead of the second game due to back issues.

Iyer mentioned that for the next six months, his focus will be on white-ball cricket, and hence, he was given the leadership of the team. He impressed many with his captaincy in the last few years, particularly in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In 2024, he took one of the best IPL teams, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), to the title win and then, ahead of 2025, he shifted his base to Punjab Kings (PBKS). Iyer then came up with another magical campaign and took the franchise to their first-ever final and playoff appearance after ten long years.

Iyer will be a key member for India both in the A series as well as the main series in Australia. He was last seen in action for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He was the leading run-getter in the tournament for India and helped them lift their second ICC title within a span of one year.
