The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup on Tuesday. Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the team's captain, while Shubman Gill is also back in the T20I fold as the vice-captain. Gill hasn't played T20I cricket for a long time and his return was a bit of a surprise.

Shubman Gill Returns, No Room for Yashasvi Jaiswal in India's Asia Cup 2025 Squad

The team was announced by the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, with Suryakumar Yadav sitting besides him. Earlier, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir had advocated for T20I selections to be based solely on Indian Premier League (IPL) performances. The squad also matches Gambhir's ideology, which is to play with an attacking intent.
Shubman Gill In, Yashasvi Jaiswal Out of India Asia Cup Squad
Shubman Gill, recently named India’s Test captain and one of the the top ODI batsmen in the World, has been added in the India squad for Asia Cup. His outstanding form during the England series, where he piled up 754 runs, including four centuries in just five matches, has caught the selectors' attention.
However, the selectors decided to continue with the opening duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who have taken India's T20I batting to a next level. With the squad size capped at 15, there are some players who have missed out. In the end, the selectors were forced to choose between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill for a spot, and the latter got the preference due to him being part of the leadership group.
Gill is likely to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma, one of the most destructive T20 openers in the world. This means that Sanju Samson might be pushed down to No. 3 with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma the next set of batters. Overall, the selectors have decided to go with a team that can play with a positive intent.
Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, and Jitesh Sharma in Middle Order
The Indian middle order had room for one more batter. In their last T20I, India had three all-rounders in the team: Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel. While Hardik and Axar didn't face any pressure, Dube's place was under contention earlier, but he has found a place in the squad. Dube's all-round credentials make him a perfect substitute to Hardik Pandya, who is one of the best all-rounders in the world.
However, Shreyas Iyer, who has performed exceedingly well over the last year, didn't find a place. Rinku Singh has been added in the team as the finisher despite him not having a great IPL season this year. Jitesh Sharma is also back in the mix as the reserve wicketkeeper behind Sanju Samson, which shows the bench strength of the team.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has found a place in the India squad Asia Cup 2025. Bumrah's return will boost the bowling attack which lacks experience. However, managing his workload remains a key concern, especially with a busy calendar ahead, including the upcoming series against the West Indies. Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana were also in line for a spot, and Harshit ended up getting it.
