Shubman Gill Joins Sachin Tendulkar & Virat Kohli in Elite List

Shubman Gill has added another big milestone to his growing list of achievements. This was his 16th international century for India, and with this hundred, he has joined a very special list. He now has the third most international centuries for India at the age of 25 or less.

The top spot in this list belongs to the ‘Master Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 40 international centuries before he turned 26. This includes 19 Test centuries and 21 ODI centuries. His talent, discipline, and hunger for runs were unmatched from a very young age. Tendulkar made his debut in 1989 as a 16-year-old and quickly became India’s most trusted batter. By the time he was 25, he had already faced the best bowling attacks in the world and succeeded. No Indian batter has matched his numbers at such a young age.

Next on the list of scoring most centuries before the age of 25 is Virat Kohli, who had scored 26 international centuries. These included 11 centuries in Test cricket and 15 in ODIs. Kohli’s rise in international cricket was impactful and key for Team India. He became one of the most prominent names in the sport and is renowned for his consistency and big scores in tough conditions.

His early years saw many match-winning knocks. At 25, Kohli was already seen as the future of Indian cricket. Now, Shubman Gill has entered this elite list with 16 international centuries at the age of 25. His recent Test hundred at Edgbaston was his seventh in Tests, along with six centuries in ODIs and three in T20Is.

This shows Gill’s ability to succeed across formats. Whether it’s red-ball or white-ball cricket, Gill has shown maturity beyond his age. The Indian Test skipper’s journey began in 2019 when he made his debut for India. But it was in 2023 and 2024 that he truly took off. His double century in ODIs, his brilliant IPL form, and consistent Test performances have made him one of India’s top young stars.

Shubman Gill Records in IND vs ENG 2nd Test

Shubman Gill continued his golden form in the IND vs ENG 2nd Test at Edgbaston. This was his third straight Test hundred against England, making him only the fifth Indian to achieve this feat. He had scored a century in Dharamshala in the last series between these two teams. The next one came in Headingley in the first Test of this tour, and now again at Edgbaston.

This century puts Shubman Gill in the list of joint-second for most Test hundreds by an Indian aged 25 or less. He shares this spot with Virender Sehwag and Ravi Shastri. Only Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of them, with a huge 19 Test hundreds before the age of 26. Gill has now started his Test captaincy journey brilliantly.

He has scored centuries in both of his first two Tests as captain, becoming only the fourth Indian skipper to do so. He joins legends like Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. Gill now also holds a place in the record books for the joint-third most centuries in the first two Tests as a captain. Only Alastair Cook (5) and Steve Smith (3) are ahead of him. He stands alongside other greats who scored hundreds in their first two Tests as captain.
