When was the Last Time India Got Enforced Follow on at Home?

3 min
India Follow on

The Indian Cricket Team and the South African Cricket Team are up against each other in the second match of the two-match Test series.

The game between the two teams is taking place at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. South Africa has been at their best in the match. After winning the first match by 30 runs in Kolkata, the Proteas have carried on the same form in the ongoing match. Opting to bat, they piled up a massive total of 489 runs on the board.

And then after that, they have been sensational with the ball. Pacer Marco Jansen troubled the Indian batters with his short balls and has provided his team with crucial breakthroughs. India lost key batters in quick succession of time as the hosts were left reeling at 122 for seven. With the kind of poor batting show that India has come up with, along with South Africa’s ‘right on the money’ bowling, the match might see another follow on in cricket history and one of the rarest follow on in India for the hosts in their test cricket history.

IND vs SA Follow on: Last Time India Got Enforced Follow on at Home?

India needs to go past 239 runs in their first innings to avoid a follow-on. However, that seems bleak. And if South Africa enforces follow-on, this will be only the second time in 15 years that hosts will face follow on in India.

The last time India were asked to follow on in a home test came in Nagpur in 2010 that too against South Africa. Notably, that was South Africa’s last win in India before the start of this series.

During that test, South Africa came up with a magical effort with the bat. They posted a mammoth total of 558 runs on the board with Hashim Amla hitting an unbeaten 253. He, along with one of the best all-rounders in the world, Jacques Kallis (173), troubled Indian bowlers, while AB de Villiers hit 53, helping their team post a massive total.

Then, with the ball, Dale Steyn, one of the best South African bowler, wreaked havoc as he picked seven wickets and helped his team bundle out India for just 233. For India, Virender Sehwag (109) hit a century, but that wasn’t enough as South Africa enforced follow-on.

In the second innings, India looked decent with the bat, but batters failed to convert their starts. Sachin Tendulkar slammed a ton, while others failed to get past the 40-run mark as India got all out for just 319, losing the clash by innings and six runs.

If South Africa manages to win the ongoing test against India, they will also win the series by a margin of 2-0. This will also be their first series win in India after a long gap of 25 years. They look favorites to win, and it will be India's second series loss at home in the last year.
