BCCI selection committee

The BCCI is all set to replace two national selectors who reports to Ajit Agarkar. This news came after the squad announcement of Asia Cup 2025. Applications are now being accepted for two positions on the BCCI selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar.

In all the formats, including Tests, One-Day Internationals, T20 Internationals, the chosen members will be in charge of selecting the Indian side. The members have a big responsibility as they will be selecting the squads for one of the best cricket teams in the world. As a result, the expectations from them will be high.

Pragyan Ojha Joins BCCI Selection Committee

According to reports, Pragyan Ojha is set to take over the office from Sridharan Sharath of South Zone. Pragyan Ojha South Zone selection comes on the basis of his experience at the international and first-class level. The other vacancy is reportedly going to occur because former India pacer Subroto Banerjee, the Central Zone selector, is being replaced.

Although having zonal representation on the selection committee is not required, it is a long-standing practice in the way the BCCI operates. Any cricketer who has first-class experience is able to be a national selector. Apart from that a candidate who wants to be a national selector must meet any one of the criteria which is designed to be the national selectors:

  • A player who has represented the team in 7 Test matches.
  • A player should have played 30 first-class games
  • A player should have played 20 first-class matches and 10 ODIs to his name.

Likewise, there is another option for the player to become a national selector. The person must be applicable to get selected for this job.

  • He must have taken retirement from the game at least 5 years ago.
  • The player must not serve on any BCCI committee for 5 years.

If the player falls under these criteria, he becomes eligible to become the national selector of India.

Ajit Agarkar Tenure as National Selector

Ajit Agarkar, a former Indian cricketer, became the chief selector for India in July 2023. Under his tenure, India had some great moments. In just five months of his appointment, India reached the finals of the ICC World Cup 2023 but eventually suffered defeat to Australia in the finals at Ahmedabad. Later, they went on to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA.

India defeated South Africa in the finals to win their second T20 World Cup title. After that India also won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in UAE by defeating New Zealand in finals. Apart from the winning moments, Agarkar has also faced some heavy criticism for the team selection. India lost BGT to Australia after 10 years, as the team poorly performed and the selection committee suffered heavy trolling. After that, the Test team went into a change as Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, who are the greatest of all time, took retirement from Test cricket.

Again, for the England tour, Agarkar's selection was a hot topic as he dropped the best Indian batsmen like Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara for the series. However, Shubman Gill was leading the team, and he managed to draw the series 2-2. The young captain raised the standards of Indian cricket and very well managed the transition period. Once again, Ajit Agarkar was in the center of criticism for the squad of Asia Cup 2025 as he did not pick Shreyas Iyer's name in the team. Currently Indian team is getting ready for Asia Cup, which is going to take place in the UAE.

Women Selection To See New Changes

This time the Asia Cup is going to be in T20 format as ICC World Cup 2026 will be in T20 format. All eight teams will face each other in fiery battle to become the greatest team in Asia. The final will take place on 28 September in Dubai. Meanwhile, India will face Pakistan on 10 September, which is going to be the biggest match in the tournament because of their history.

Moreover, four selectors on the Neetu David-led women's selection panel have tenure expiring in September; therefore, there will also be a change to the panel. Shyama Shaw, who came in 2023, is the only one most likely to stay. Renu Margrate, Aarti Vaidya, Kalpana Venkatachar, and David are the other panelists.
