Suryakumar Yadav to Lose T20I Captaincy to Shubman Gill? Know Full Story

The captaincy of the Indian Cricket Team has been in the news for the last few months. Currently, there are three different captains for three different formats, with Shubman Gill leading in Tests, Rohit Sharma in ODIs and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is, a situation which has hardly been there in Indian cricket.

Since the last few weeks, various media reports have been circulating that state the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make changes in the captaincy. A few reports even suggested that only one captain will be there for all the formats, which is unlikely to happen in the current situation, where the team plays continuous cricket.

Will Shubman Gill be Captain in T20Is?

As per the reports in Dainik Jagran, it is learned that there will be two different captains for the three formats. The reports claimed that the Test and T20I skipper will be the same, while there will be a different candidate for the leadership role in the 50-over format.

The reports stated that Shubman Gill is all set to become the T20I skipper after Suryakumar Yadav, who is one of the best T20 batsmen going around. Gill, who was recently appointed as the Test captain, is seen as the future of Indian Cricket and is the only name that is in consideration for the leadership in all three formats.

The BCCI and the team management believe that Shubman Gill can lead for a long period of time, and they want someone who can take the team forward. With Suryakumar Yadav turning 35 in a few months, it's fair to say that he is in the fag end of his career.

Hence, BCCI has already identified his replacement, and it will be none other than Shubman Gill. Notably, the young batter is the captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has done a reasonable job for his side in the last two seasons. Shubman Gill T20I captaincy can start a new era for the Men in Blue in the format.

Shubman Gill Appointed Vice-captain for Asia Cup 2025

Recently, Shubman Gill made a return to the Indian T20I team as he was named in the squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Not only did he return to the side, but was also appointed the vice-captain of the side. His last game in the format for India came in 2023 but he has all the traits to become the best batsman in the world across formats.

Shubman Gill was earlier appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian T20I captain after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. However, due to the ODIs and Tests, he didn't get time to play the shortest format of the game. But his return to the team that too as a vice-captain sends a strong message.

There were reports in the Indian Express which revealed that head coach Gautam Gambhir wants to groom Shubman Gill as the captain in T20Is. This is the reason why he was named as the vice-captain of the side for the Asia Cup 2025, which will begin on 9th September.

Shubman Gill - Test Captain of India

Shubman Gill was recently appointed as the Test captain of India after Rohit Sharma called time on his career in the longest format of the game. Many doubted him when the decision was taken, but he gave a perfect reply to all the critics.
Under his leadership, India went to drew the series against England by a margin of 2-2. He also became the first-ever captain to win a Test match at Edgbaston after his side thrashed the Ben Stokes-led side by a massive margin of 336 runs.
Gill also led from the front with the bat as he came up with his best show in Tests. The premier batter hammered 754 runs in the series to go with four centuries, including a double ton. During the process, he showed why he is regarded so highly. The series also saw his average increase to the 40s from the 30s.
