All it took was a point against the Blackburn Rovers on Friday to fulfil the dream of a generation. Coventry City is finally back in the Premier League. It is Frank Lampard who helped the Sky Blues end their 25-year wait for top-flight action. Why is Coventry City still playing in the Championship?

The simple answer is Coventry City won promotion to the Premier League in the 2025/26 season. This means they can only participate in the top-flight in the 2026/27 season. Hence, despite winning promotion, the Sky Blues have to compete in the Championship for the remainder of the season.

The EFL Championship usually has 46-game-long seasons. At the end of the 43rd gameweek, Coventry City confirmed their position as one of the top two clubs in the league, winning automatic promotion. They have 86 points in 43 games in the EFL Championship. With a 10-point lead over second-placed Ipswich Town, they can also seal the Championship title if they win their next game or Ipswich Town fails to win their next game.

Frank Lampard's team still has three games to play in the Championship. They host Portsmouth tonight and Wrexham on Sunday this month before completing their Championship journey with an away game against Watford on Saturday, May 2nd. When is Coventry City in the Premier League?

Coventry City have locked their position in the 2026/27 season of the Premier League. They will be joined by two more promoted clubs from the second division. Coventry City and the other two new boys will replace Wolves and two other clubs that will be relegated from the Premier League after the 2025/26 season.

After suffering multiple heartbreaks like the Championship Playoff Final defeat in 2023 and the playoff semifinal defeat in 2025, they finally had enough in the tank to avoid the playoffs altogether and secure automatic promotion.

After a financial mess resulted in relegation from the Premier League in 2001, the Sky Blues suffered as they spent multiple years in the then First Division and the newly inducted Championship. The club was mere hours from bankruptcy before they were bailed out by the Sisu hedge fund as well. In the early 2010s, they went down to League One, and just under a decade ago, they spent the 2017/18 season in League Two, the fourth tier of professional football in England. Mark Robins did not give up as the manager and helped them reach the Championship again from League Two. He could've created a wonderful legacy by guiding them to the Premier League, but a defeat to Luton in the finals in 2023 broke his heart.

The board, led by the owner Doug King, decided to bring Frank Lampard into the fold. The legendary ex-Chelsea midfielder had a questionable reputation coming in. Despite positive moments from his stints with Derby County and Chelsea, Lampard still needed to prove he could guide them home.
