Why Will Indian Football Team Not Compete in 2026 Asian Games?

The Asian Games are all set to be held in Japan from September 19 onwards. With just a few months left for the prestigious tournament, India has been handed a major blow as the Indian men's national team won't be competing in the Asian Games. Hong Kong, whose men's and women's team failed to make it to the AFC U23 Asian Cup and AFC Women's Cup will play in the Asian Games instead.

This is indeed a big, shocking moment for the Indian football fraternity. In this article, we shall take a closer look at the recent developments that led to India's absence in the Asian Games and how Hong Kong would be playing in the 2026 Asian Games.

Why India will not be playing in Asian Games 2026?

The Indian women's team automatically qualified for the women's tournament after qualifying for AFC Women's Asian Cup, but the men's team failed to make the final list. The initial criteria set for the men's team were the 16 teams qualifying for the AFC U23 Asian Cup. India, despite a valiant effort, fell short to Qatar and lost the chance to qualify for the Asian Games.

What was surprising was that Australia's absence didn't automatically benefit India. The Kangaroos are not part of the Olympic Council of Asia, and their absence opened another slot, which should have directly favoured India. Hong Kong made full advantage of it, and their proactive lobbying alongside maintaining continuous communication with the OCA and leveraging influence through key figures like Eric Fok Kai-Shan saw them making the final list.

Why is this a missed opportunity for India?

The failure to participate in the Asian Games despite coming so close to the AFC U23 Asian Cup reflects a lack of long-term tournament planning. There was no visible late push from the All India Football Federation and no reported lobbying at the OCA level. The Asian Games could have been a brilliant opportunity for the young boys, given the extraordinary form of the U23 boys led by Naushad Moosa. At a time when the men's footballing cycle is almost non-existent after failure to make it to AFC Asian Cup 2027, this would have been a big morale boost and a perfect opportunity to compete against strong teams like South Korea, Japan, and Iran.

The Hong Kong national football team pulled one of the biggest underdog stories in the previous edition of the Asian Games after making it to the semi-finals, but India has fared better than Hong Kong in recent AFC qualification fixtures and failure to compete in the Asian Games is indeed a lost golden opportunity.
