The Football Association of Hong Kong is responsible for the operation of the Hong Kong national football team. They were formed in 1914 and have worked as the major football body to take care of the Hong Kong national football team players. The Football Association of Hong Kong organizes the Hong Kong Premier League, as well as the Hong Kong First Division and Hong Kong Women's League. They are also responsible for appointing and paying the Hong Kong national football team manager, currently Ashley Westwood, and for hosting matches at the Hong Kong national football team stadium.
The Hong Kong football team actually started playing football starting from the 1937 Hong Kong-Macau Interport Tournament, but the Hong Kong national football teams were recognized as a FIFA and AFC member in 1954. In their first international match, the Hong Kong national football team held South Korea to a 3-3 draw thanks to some terrific performances from the Hong Kong football team players. The early years were promising for the Hong Kong football team, as they finished in third place at the 1956 AFC Asian Cup after hosting the tournament.
The Hong Kong national football team participated in three AFC Asian Cup tournaments from 1956-1968, finishing in fourth place in 1964! A prominent figure for the Hong Kong football team players at the time was their legendary forward Ho Cheung Yau, who scored 14 goals in 34 games. The Hong Kong national football team players also fought hard to reach the quarterfinals of the 1958 Asian Games, with their good times being heralded by the legendary Hong Kong national football team coach, Lai Shui Wing. Under the Hong Kong national football team coach Shiu Wing, they won 16 of their 43 matches and qualified for major tournaments.
