Liverpool Owners FSG Start Talks With Getafe Over Possible Takeover

The Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have won over the Liverpool fans in the 2025 summer transfer window with their lavish spending to strengthen Arne Slot's side. The FSG group has greenlit big-money signings of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, with the Reds also being strongly linked to a record move for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak. Amid all that, it appears that the Liverpool owners are aiming to strengthen their ‘multi club’ portfolio with the acquisition of La Liga side, Getafe.

What Are Liverpool Owners FSG Plans With Getafe?

The Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have been the Liverpool owners since October 2010, when they purchased the club from their previous owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett. It seems that FSG are now eager to build on their multi-club model, as it's being reported that they are in active negotiations with the president of La Liga side Getafe over a possible staged takeover.

Getafe's president, Angel Torres, has held talks with FSG over the possibility of selling his majority ownership stake to the Liverpool owners, who would assume responsibility for the La Liga club. It's further claimed that even though Torres has valued Getafe at £160 million in the past, the price tag for a staged takeover is now being lowered to around £100 million, which has allowed FSG to move forward with their talks to take over the club.

FSG are eager to build on a multi-club system and have been trying to acquire another European club since 2024, when Michael Edwards became their chief executive of football. They have reportedly had talks with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux and Spanish side Malaga over a possible takeover, but talks failed to materialize on that end. However, the Liverpool owners have built a strong relationship with the Getafe owner and are now aiming to accelerate talks to possibly take over the club and make Getafe a sister club for Liverpool in Europe.

How Have FSG Performed as The Liverpool Owners?

Ever since they became the Liverpool owners in 2010, FSG have played a significant role in helping the Reds get back to the top of English football. After some initial years of struggle, FSG triggered the change for Liverpool by appointing Jurgen Klopp as their manager in 2015. They gave the German manager free rein over the kind of changes and signings he wanted to strengthen the squad, and the results started to show a few years later.

Klopp had a memorable stint as the Liverpool manager, helping them win the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League in his first major trophy. He also guided them to the 2019/20 Premier League title, helping them win their first English league title since 1990. The German gaffer made Liverpool play some brilliant attacking football and also helped them win the FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and Carabao Cup titles before departing in 2024.

FSG went on to make the decision to appoint Arne Slot as his replacement in 2024. That turned out to be a real masterstroke as Slot has proven to be a perfect successor for Klopp. The Dutch coach helped Liverpool win the 2024/25 Premier League title in his first season in charge. Under the FSG ownership, Liverpool have won two Premier League titles, three Carabao Cups, the FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup titles. The American owners are also the majority owners of the Major League Baseball (MLB) side Boston Red Sox, who have won four World Series titles under the ownership of FSG.
